The Solution: Liberation
A Labor member of the British House of
Commons, R. H. S. Crossman, who was one
of the members of the Anglo-American In-
quiry Committee on Palestine, provided
what all reasonable men must regard as the
proper' reply to Prime Minister Attlee's at-
titude towards the Jews of Palestine. Mr.
Crossman stated: -
"There is only one way of smashing a
resistance movement, and that it to lib-
erate it—smashing the conditions under
which it has grown, giving to those
people who were willing to die for it
the thing for which they were willing
to die."
Mr. Crossman echoed the very pledge of
the Haganah: that all its activities - other
than those which are essential for self-
defense would be abandoned the moment
the British undertake to carry into effect
the recommendation for the settlement of
100,000 Jews in Palestine. But Britain
has seen fit to abuse Jewish rights, to
humiliate Palestine Jewry and to desecrate
the most sacred day on the Jewish calendar
—the Sabbath. The Palestine administration
has seen fit to inaugurate a war upon the
Jews. She has yet to learn that liberation
brings peace, that suppression encourages
resistance and anger.
Surely Britain knows by this time that
all Jews everywhere, and all liberty-loving
people; will back up the demands of those
who are fighting for freedom, and that lib-
ertarians and those who desire to see fair
play rule the world will not let the Palestin-
ian Jews down in this struggle for justice.
The basic principles in this fight are
simple: Palestine's doors must be kept wide
open for Jewish settlers, and there must be
an end to efforts which tend to make an
oppressive police state of the Holy Land of
Israel.

Theodore Levin's Appointment
President Truman has earned the gratitude of the entire
community for his selection of Theodore Levin as his
appointee to the U. S. District Court in the Eastern Michigan
District.
Recognized as an able attorney, whose high qualities
of leadership earned for him positions of great trust in the
Jewish and non-Jewish communities, M. Levin_has justly
been hailed as a man who will lend great dignity to this

ELIJAH'S GIFT
Once upon a time there lived a very pious
man who was also poor. He never seemed to
have enough food to feed his family.
One day, when the man was working in his
field, Elijah appeared disguised as a merchant.
Elijah gave the poor man two coins. The pious
man used these two coins for trading and he
soon became very rich. With his wealth he forgot
his piety and became a greedy man.
The prophet Elijah appeared one day and took
away the two coins he had given him. The man
soon lost all his money and became poor again.
He wept bitterly, grieving for his lost wealth.
Elijah pitied the man. For the third time he
appeared before him and said, "If I return the
two coins to you, will you promise to continue
being a pious man?"
The man promised. Elijah returned the coins.
The man became wealthy again. He did not for-
get his promise. For the rest of his days he was
generous and kind to all of his neighbors.
