'MILLIONS FOR DEFENSE'
British circles apparently are less "vio-
mt lent" in their attitude toward the Jewish
Agency for Palestine and the leaderi of
the Zionist movement. While it is not
generally admitted that Britain's worst
blunder in her entire diplomatic history
was the invasion of Jewish Agency head-
quarters and the arrest of thousands of
Jews, including rabbis, on the Sabbath
day, there are reasons for believing that
the errors at last al.; recognized in Eng-
land. British troops have found so little
evidence of an organized Jewish revolt,
and the Jewish Agency's denial of impli-
cations that it is linked with the resistance
movements is so emphatic, that the whole-
sale arrests react to the disgrace of Eng-
lish politicianS.
The rumor that Field Marshal Mont-
gomery had planned the strategy of at-
tack upon the Jewish Agency adds to the
discredit of the British government. It
merely indicates that England tried to use
the war hero's popularity - for her mis-
chievous ends.
In the meantime, the battle for justice
goes on. Even "Monty" must accept the
critical treatment which the recent Brit-
ish outrages in Palestine deserve.
Public opinion must be mobilized
throughout the world to compel justice for
the Jewish people. It means that millions
will be needed for defense.
This does not mean advocacy of terror-
ism. But it DOES call for exposing to full
public view the unjustice of British acts
which have resulted in the destruction of
Meshek Yagur, and immeasurable harm
to other colonies.
No matter what the cost, British perfidy
must be exposed, so that there shall be no
more abuse of elementary Jewish rights,
in Palestine as well as anywhere else.
Remember, friends: MILLIONS FOR
DEFENSE, NOT ONE CENT FOR
TRIBUTE.

The Bravest Man I Ever Met

By REV. WILLIAM C. KERNAN
Executive Director, Institute for American Democracy, Inc.

Here is the story of Sgt. Leo Rosskamm who recently was awarded the Dis-
tirguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism. Rosskamm, a 27-year-old
refugee, came to the U. S. in 1939 after having spent. many grueling months in the
Nazi concentration camp at Buchenwald. A few months after he came to the U. S.,
he volunteered for the Army but was turned down because he was an alien. He
applied again in January 1941 right after enlistments were opened to aliens. This
time he was accepted. He fought in the battles of Makin Island, Eniwetok, Saipan,
and Okinawa.
On Okinawa a badly wounded American dropped almost in front of a Japanese
machine-gun pillbox. Rosskamm, whO was a member of the Medical Corps, called
for a flame-thrower to cover the entrance - of- the enemy position and dashed over
to the wounded soldier to give him- first aid. c Glancing up, he saw two armed
Japanese advancing toward him, He killed both, Japanese, continued with the treat-
-
ment of the Yank's wounds and carried him back to the rear.
On another occasion, braving intense and continuous fire, Rosskamm admin-
istered first aid to a man whose arm was almost blown off by a mortar fragment.
Working with surgical shears and a trench. knife, he removed the badly mangled
arm, turned back the artery and applied a pressure bandage to save the man from
bleeding to death. Since immediate evacuation. was impossible, Rosskamm stayed
with the soldier until he was able to summon a litter bearer.
When during the final days of Okinawa nine men lay wounded on the crest
of a small hill, Rosskamm went to help 'them through machine • gun fire so thick
that it seemed impossible for anyone to. get. through without 'being .hit. He bandaged
five men and as he knelt to dress the wounds of the sixth, a bullet struck the back •
of his helmet, went all the way through and came out in front. It knocked him.'
flat but left him uninjured. He tore the helmet off and began to work again. Moments
later another bullet struck him in th0 neck Despite the pain and blood, he worked
on until the last. man was treated, saving the lives of seven of the nine 'Men. •
- These are some of the heroic exploits of Sgt. Rosskamm. There were others,
too, all of which caused his commanding officer on Okinawa to call him "the bravest
man I ever met."
The citation awarding the Distinguished Service Cross to the young Jewish
refugee reads: "The intrepedity and extraordinary heroism displayed by Technician
Rosskamm was a source of deep inspiration to all who witnessed his acts, which
were performed in the finest tradition of the United States Military Service."
By such men of every race. religion, and national otigin America has been built.

Behind Britain's
Zion Conspiracy

By BERNARD LERNER

Out in Jerusalem, in an office situated
ironically on Bethlehem Road, where, ac-
cording to Jewish legend Mother Rachel
weeps at midnight over the plight of her
children, the people of Israel, I met
Achmed Shukeiri, chief of the Arab Of-
fice, who reiterated in his conversation the
words of Goebbels justified the murder of
six million Jews of Europe "because Hit-
ler could not have been all wrong," and
warned that his side was ready to "play
along with Moscow." They always play
along, the Husseini-Shukeiri mob.
Outside the Young Men's Christian As-
sociation building in Jerusalem, where the
hearings of the Anglo-American Inquiry
Committee were being held at the time, I
met Jamal el Husseini; he issued the same
warning as Shukeiri (he being Shukeiri's
chief) of playing along with Moscow, and
reiterated , his justification of the mass
murder of six million Jews "for Hitler
couldn't be all wrong .. . you have got to
see both sides of a question, my man, both
sideS of a question . . ."
* * *
Jamal Husseini saw both sides so well
that he joined in igniting, at a time most
critical for the Allies, the Iraq coup d'etat
to gauleiter the Middle East for Hitler.
And how these gentlemen 1 ave been
joined by a third. It is a matter of minutes
and they get straight through to Cairo for
instructions from Haj Amin el II asseini,
the former Mufti of Jerusalem. The Mufti.,
the man who plotted the Iraq upriSing and
the arch-author of the plan to exterminate
the Jews of Europe, is now biding his
time. He is waiting for the British to ac-
complish "phases one and two" of their
conspiracy against the Jews of Palestine,
phase one being the arrest of their leaders,
and phase two being the disarming of
Palestine's Jews. Then he will step in for
"mopping up" operations. With the British
having laid the groundwork, he hopes to
be able to complete "operations". But
knowing Haganah, I know that the con-
spiracy will not achieve its pernicious
aims.
* * *
Having been introduced to the Arab-
fascist co - . plotters of the Bevin-Attlee con-
spiracy against Jews, you must meet .the
Jewish leaders detained in Latrun:.
Moshe Shertok: When Haj Amin el Hus-
seini, former Mtifti of Jerusalem, was
igniting rebellion in Iraq against the war-
shattered Allies; when his aide-de-camp,
Jamal el Husseini, assisted the Mufti in
a coup d'etat to help the Axis wrest the
Mediterranean from the democratic
powers, Moshe Shertok, chief of the
Jewish Agency's Political Department, was
traveling across the face of-.Palestine call-
ing upon Jews to volunteer for the British
forces, irrespective of Britain's past and
present policy towards the Jews of Pales-
tine. Moshe Shertok, as an individual, and
his Jewish Agency colleagues as a group,
recruited, rallied, mobilized the thousands
of Jews who held Rommel back in the
western desert, even as the British were
burning government papers and evacuat-
ing Palestine.
*
*
When Haj Amin el Husseini and Jamal
el Husseini again are plotting against de-
mocracy in the Middle East and terroriz-
ing all Arab leaders who prefer modera-
tion and common sense to the fascist-
gang methods of the Husseini clan, Dr.
Bernard -Joseph, Canadian-born, legal ad-
viser of the Jewish Agency, is in jail with
Moshe Shertok. Joseph was alongside-
Moshe Shertok, even as British politicians
were rejecting the help of the Jews which
the British military so sorely needed. .
* * *

David HaCohen and Dov Berl Repetur
also are in Latrun. But in the days when
British shipping was sunk on its way to
the Mediterranean areas, and Britain
could obtain neither technicians nor ma-
terial to build the bridges, the roadways,
and other military installations needed
to speed reinforcements to stem the Rom-
mel tide, David MaCohen and Dov Berl
Repetur, as directors of Solel Bone, con-
tracting cooperative of Histadruth, Jewish
Federation of Labor, worked indefatigably
recruiting workers- and undertaking tasks
which the British technicians regarded
as unimplementable with the - limited ma-
terial and against the challenge of •time
running out. Nothing was unimplement-
able and impossible for HaCohen • and
Repetur and the thousands of. workers
of Solel Bone. Had they felt as the British
did, Rommel would have swept forward,
the war ending much later.
Now these men are in Latrun. They • are
the enemy. Aged Rabbi J. L. Fishman is
the enemy. Isaac Grenbaum, the header
whose peOple has been slaughtered in
Poland, is the enemy. Conversely, Ha
Amin el Husseini is Britain's friend.
