Never' Will I See Thee Blessed Land

"My heart is in the East and I'm in the Utmost West"
(Jehuda Halevi)

BY DR, NOAH E. ARONSTAM
Never will I see thee Blessed Land,
Land of cherished dreams;
Never will thy scent of bloom distill
To this distant shore.
Never will thy sunrise glad my heart
Nor the dew of night
Cool my feverish brow with tranquil steep.
Had I eagle's pinions I would fly,
Scan thy hills and dales,
Scan thy meadows and thy glens,
Scan majestic Carmel as its lists
To the murmuieing waves of Haifa Bay—
Then — I'd gladly lay me down to die!

Haverhill, Mass., Honors
Memory of Sam Winer
By Exceeding Quota

The American Jewish commun-
ity joined with the Jewish com-
munity of Haverhill, Mass., in
mourning the passing of a de-
voted fighter in the struggle for
Jewish survival.
Sam Winer, 48-year-old leader
of the Haverhill community and
outstanding figure in its drive on
behalf of Europe's 1,400,000 Jew-
ish survivors, is dead.
Sam Winer died on June 3 at
the opening of the meeting in
Haverhill to launch the 1946 cam-
paign on behalf of the $100,000,-
000 United Jewish Appeal for
Refugees, Overseas Needs and
Palestine.
He had just greeted Senator
Alben W. Barkley, principal
speaker of the evening, and re-
turned to his seat on the dais. As
he sat down he collapsed. Within
a few minutes he was dead. The
rabbi a few moments later in-
toned the prayer in Sam Winer's
memory.
The meeting which Sam Winer
had organized on behalf of the
U.J.A. became a memorial meet-
ing, paying tribute to his cour-
age, his vision and his singular
determination as a leader in be-
half of his people.
In paying tribute to Sam Win-
er's leadership in this campaign,
the Haverhill community, that
evening raised $162,000, or $12-
000 in excess of , its $150,000 goal.
