Buxton Against
Disarming Jews,
Arabs in. Zion
BOSTON (JTA) — A warning
against "the impracticability of
trying to disarm either the Jews
or the Arabs at this time" was
voiced here by Frank W. Buxton,
a member of the Anglo-American
Inquiry Committee on Palestine,
speaking at a private dinner. He
expressed confidence in the abil-
ity of the rank and file Jews and
Arabs to dwell together in Pal-
estine in peace.
Buxton, editor of the Boston
Herald, said that the presence of
well-armed semi-military groups
in both camps was a deterrent,
rather than an invitation to open
conflict in Palestine, and that
killings of Jews and Arabs in the
past have been due to the fact
that the Arabs were armed while
the Jews were defenseless.
"From personal interviews with
many persons intimately associ-
ated with the scenes of strife,"
he said, "I feel sure of the ability
of the great bulk of Arabs and
Jews to live in harmony. I actual-
ly_ saw instances of Jews and
Arabs living side by side in many
parts of that restless land, while
treating each other with neigh-
borly respect."
Returning to his original warn-
ing against the disarmament of
the semi-military groups, Mr.
Buxton stated that enforcement
of disarmament was "virtually
impossible, anyway," and hence,
not worth incurring the ill feel-
ings "that certainly would follow
the attempt at such enforcement."
The Jews and Arabs are both
-well armed, he said. He estimated
that there were probably 50,000
to 60,000 well armed Jews in-Pal-
estine.
"These arms would disappear
like magic," he pointed out, "if
the owners were called upon to
surrender their equipment. Blood-
hounds could not find them. An
arms prohibition at this time
would be futile, and an encour-
agement to the outbreaks of vio-
lence."

Glassgold Claims
Deaths Provoked
Landsberg Riot
UNRRA Camp Chief Says
Disturbance Due to Unstable
, Condition of DPs
AUGSBURG, Germany (JTA)
—A. C. Glassgold, UNRRA direc-
tor of the Landsberg camp, told
the military court trying 20 of
the camp's residents for partici-
pation in a riot there on April
28, that the recent deaths of Jew-
ish DPs during outbreaks in
Stuttgart and Regensburg, "plus
an occasional outburst at Lands-
berg," were the chief contribut-
ing factors to the disturbance.
The incident which touched off
the fracas, he said, was the dis-
appearance of two DP guards..
Testifying at the fourth day of
the trial, Glassgold said that the
Friday, May 24, [946
disturbance was "unquestionably
impulsive, with no sign of any
plan of cohesive action." He 'add-
ed that their past experiences
had made the DPs emotionally
unstable.
The prosecution presented 10
military witnesses, including Sgt.
William Fitzpatrick, who with a
private named Martin, reported
the first meeting of most of the
defendants at the rear of the
camp, but did not arrest any of
them, merely stopping them from
leaving the camp. Both said the
defendants offered no resistance.
Fitzpatrick confirmed the fact
that the Provost Marshal had
agreed to free all of the defend-
ants except Shmuel Nussbaum,
who had a knife, but they re-
fused unless all were freed.
The defense objected to the in-
troduction of the testimony of the
18 other prosecution witnesses
who were unable to identify any
of the defendants. Its objections
were taken under advisement
by the court.

8 Displaced Jews
Stabbed at Belsen
LONDON (JTA) — Eight dis-
placed Jews were stabbed on
May 15 by Polish DPs during a
football match at the former
Bergen-Belsen conc e n t r a t i o n
camp, where both groups are
quartered, and another Jew was
shot by uniformed Polish mem-
bers of the camp police, it was
revealed here.
Norbet Wellheim and Bernard
Laufer, members of the Central
Jewish Committee at Belsen, who
have- just arrived here, said that
the man who was shot, a Jewish
but leader at a training farm near
the camp, is in serious condition.
They also disclosed that on the
evening of May 15, four Polish
police entered the Jewish section
of the camp brandishing pistols.
They were arrested by Jewish
police, who found that one of
the four had been involved in an
attack in February on three mem-
bers of the Jewish Central Com-
mittee.
Following the attacks, Well-
heim said, the camp administra-
tion was urged to arm Jewish po-
lice to the same extent that the
Poles are armed and to assign a
unit of the Jewish Brigade to
guard duty at Belsen.

Only enough for one day's electricity
for the 31/2-million people we serve ...
Pictured above is one normal day's diet for the giant
furnaces of the Detroit Edison Company. We're using
less than 7000 tons now, thanks to your help in con-
serving electricity. But our coal reserve is low. It may
be two or three weeks before enough coal reaches us
to permit unrestricted use of electricity.
You will be notified as soon as the emergency is over.
Meanwhile it's urgent that ALL cititens in Southeastern
Michigan continue to observe brownout measures.
