Admission of 100,000 Most
Acute Problem—McDonald
CHICAGO--Characterizing the transfer of 100,000 of the Jewish
victims of Nazi and Fascist persecution from camps in Europe to
new homes: in Palestine as one of the most acute postwar problems,
James: G. McDonald; American member of the Anglo-American
Committee of Inquiry on Palestine, told the National Conference
of the $100,000,000 United Jewish. Appeal at the Standard Club
here that the immigration of these homeless Jews into Palestine
must be put into effect quickly "if a beginning is to be made in
the rescue of the remnant of European Jewish victims of the Nazi
program • of annihilation."
He emphasized that immediate large-scale immigration into
Palestine and the removal of restrictions on the purchase of land
by Jews recommended by the joint British-American Committee
could •be carried out "without injury to the legitimate interests of
the Arab people in Palestine." He added that if the British and
American governments "are deeply concerned to implement the
recommendations of the Committee of Inquiry," • the opposition of
the Arab world would not be strong enough to deter them from
achieving this objective. -
Implementation of the report of the Anglo-American Committee
of Inquiry on Palestine, will leave* the remaining 1,300,000 Jewish
survivors the "forgotten men" of Europe, Edward M. M. -Warburg,
chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee and of the United
Jewish Appeal of Greater New York, declared.
Lehman Wants Immediate Transfer of 100,000 Jews
NEW YORK—The immediate transfer of 100,000 displaced Jews
from Europe to Palestine, as recommended by the Anglo-American
inqthry committee, was urged today by Herbert H. Lehman,
former head of the UNRRA, in a statement to the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency.
Britain's delay in implementing the recommendations of the
Anglo-American Palestine committee was attacked at a dinner ar-
ranged by the "American, League for a Free Palestine to launch a
$3,000,000 drive "to. force the gates of Palestine."
Senator Magnuson of Washington urged immediate admittance
of 100,000 Jews and U. S. support for establishment of a "Hebrew
nation." He asserted that the U. S. was being- asked to join in
abandoning 1,500,000 Jews in Europe. •
Senator Myers of Pennsylvania disclosed that he is planning
to introduce a resolution in the Senate -urging the State Department
to refuse to recognize the independence of Transjordan. "We cannot
permit Palestine to be mutilated, because it is the sacred homeland
of the Hebrew nation," he said.
Other speakers included Reps. Andrew Sommers and Augustus
Bennet of New York, who, with the two Senators, received awards
from the League for their "contribution in Congress to the fight
for Hebrew freedom." Peter Bergson, 'chairman of the Hebrew
Committee of National Liberation, also spoke.
