YOU WILL DECIDE!

1,400,000 Jews who remain alive in Europe have
not been saved. They have only been reprieved. For tea
years and more they—the first victims of Nazism—stood up
against the bitterest blows of the oppressors: Today, they
still await their fate in uncertainty.
For them, deliverance from the sword has lost its
meaning.
Not a dagger but a straw, the straw of indifference, will
suffice to finish Hitler's work
Whether these Jewish survivors—men ,and women and
children—are to be truly saved is for us to decide.
Anti-Semitism and displacement have made the plight
of the remaining Jews of Europe far, fat worse. than that
of other war victims. Most of them are not receiving any
aid from inter-governmental sources. They do not ask for
preferential treatment. They hope merely to be raised from
the level of sub-humanity to the level of survival. They
cry out to us, not for special favors, but for life itself.
We can save them. We must. Want of heart and deter;
urination will consign these survivors to the doom the

Nazi planned. We have only to ignore their need. Hun=
ger, cold and blighted hopes will do the rest.

1946 is the most crucial year in Jewish history. It is the
year of survival. They have weathered the wave of intoler-
ance; we must rescue them from its undertow. We have a
dual responsibility, to ourselves and to them, which can-
not be evaded or postponed.

from savings, from necessities even, in order that they may
be assured life. "Whosoever preserves a life, it is as though
he preserved a full universe."
We of the American community are the arsenal of sur-;
wival. If we fail to give full support to the Battalion of
Mercy—the United Jewish Appeal—we. must scratch off
lives for the dollars that fall short.

In recognition of this emergency the United Jewish
Appeal is asking this year for an unprecedented sum—
$100,000,000.
These 100,000,000 dollars constitute an invincible
armada. They will go forth to conquer in the name of
mercy, to redeem for the cause of humanity. They will heal
the sick, lift up the weak, rescue the oppressed and feed
and clothe the hungry and cold.

One million four hundred thousand human beings
await your decision. Shall they live, or shall they die?

And if this colossal sum is to convey lasting benefits;
it must also provide a country, a home and a welcome, in
Palestine and other lands, for the oppressed, for those who
cannot go back to their former homes, for those who have
no homes to go back to
The sum of $100,000,000 cannot be raised unless we
think in terms of 'seeds and lives. It cannot come from in-
come alone. It must come from every available source-

SACRIFICE! Can you honestly enjoy all the good things
of life amid so much suffering? Do you feel quite right
about being so comfortable, when over a million of your
brothers starve . . . and live in feat?
