Business and Professional Groups Rally
Full Support to Help Raise $2,000,000

at Several Meetings

Detroit business and profes-
sional men have rallied in full
support of the Allied Jewish
Campaign to raise $2,000,000 for
the United Jewish Appeal in 1946.
Under the chairmanship of
Max Schuster, the metals section
met at a dinner at the Belcrest
Hotel on April 24. Prominent
campaign speakers described the
work of the Joint Distribution
Committee, the United Palestine
Appeal and the National Refugee
Service—the agencies supported
by the United Jewish Appeal.
The Filling Stations, Tires and
Accessories group heard Rabbi
Hirsch E. L. Freund, who was
coordinator for Jewish Activities
for the Eighth Air Force, at a
dinner April 25 in the Conference
Room of the Jewish Community
Center.
Visited Bergen-Belsen
Rabbi Freund, who returned to
this country recently after 43
months as a chaplain with the
Third Air Division, Eighth Air
Force, made several trips as an
observer to the infamous Bergen-
Belsen and Buchenwald concen-
tration camps. At the..dinner last
night, which was under the chair-
manship of William Gershenson,
Rabbi Freund discussed the situa-
tion of Jewish displaced persons
overseas.
Harvey Goldman, David Emer-
man and Ben Silberstein will be
hosts to the machinery section at
a dinner in the English Room
of the Hotel Statler at 6:30 p. m.,
Monday, April 29. An outstand-
- ing United Jewish Appeal speak-
er will discuss the work being
done for the relief and rehabili-
tation of Jewish war victims
throughout the world, through
the medium of the agencies bene-
fiting from the Allied Jewish
Campaign.
Scrap Iron Section
The Scrap Iron section will
meet at 8 p. m., Tuesday, April
30, in the Ginsburg Lounge of
the Jewish Center, to pledge sup_
port to the 1946 Emergency Al-
lied Jewish Campaign. Samuel J.
Rands will be chairman of the
meeting.
Invitations have been sent out
by Morris L. Fruman, honorary
chairman; Sidney Gorman, co-
chairman and Samuel Kaufer, co-
chairman to members of the
Wreckers and Auto Parts Section
for a meeting to be held at 8:30
p. m. Wednesday, May 1, in the
Conference Room of the Center.
Aaron Droock is scheduled to be
principal speaker.
Building Trades Division
Meetings of leaders of the
Building Trades Division were
held at the homes of Barney
Smith and Joseph Holtzman April
18 and 19 to plan campaign func-
tions for the division.
Under the leadership of Ben
Wilk, the Lumber and Building
Supply Section met April 18
at the D. W. Simons United He-
brew School to discuss campaign
activities and to assign prospects.
A committee was formed, includ-
ing Saul Gertzman, William
Borin, Arthur Fleischmann, David
Goldberg and Meyer Friedman,
to plan a trade dinner, to be held
at the Belcrest Hotel, on Tues-
day, April 30 at 6:30 p. m.
Members of the Roofers and
Tinsmiths Section were guests of
their group's campaign commit-
tee, under the chairmanship of
Jacob E. Kalt, at a Passover
party on April 21 at the Jewish
Cultural Association. Methods for
mobilizing industrywide support
were discussed.
Fred M. Butzel and Walter
Fields were hosts of the Hard-
ware Section at the Butzel home,
on Tuesday evening. The im-
portance was stressed for united
community support in the drive.
An important dinner meeting
of the group was held on April
23 in the Crystal Ballroom of the
Book Cadillac Hotel. The group
was addressed by Rabbi Freund.

Mercantile Division
Continuing Dry Goods Section

18 at the Jewish Home for the

Morris Shatzen. Pledge slips and
prospect lists were assigned for
individual follow-up and solici-
tation.
The Furniture Section, with
Louis Robinson as chairman, held
a luncheon meeting in the Eng-
lish Room of the Book-Cadillac
hotel on Monday afternoon to
plan individual solicitation of
section members. A successful
dinner meeting of the Women's
Apparel Section was held at the
Great Lakes Club of the Hotel
Belcrest Tuesday evening under
the co-chairmanship of Israel
Himelhoch and Max Osnos. Rec-
man of the Jewelry division of
the United Jewish Appeal, he was

Rabbi Adler Speaks
Rabbi Morris Adler, recently
returned from overseas, was the
guest speaker at a dinner meet-
ing of the Men's Apparel section,
held April 24 in the Normandie
Room of the Book Cadillac Hotel.
Responding to Rabbi Adler's stir-
ring plea for aid to Europe's
stricken Jews, the trade substan-
tially increased its contributions
over previous years.
The same evening members of
the Jewelers Section heard S.
Ralph Lazrus, treasurer of the
Benrus Watch Co. and leading
figure in New York's civic life,
speaking at a dinner held in the
Crystal Ballroom of the Book
Cadillac Hotel. As national chair-

wide group of physicians on the

Krolik delivered a timely mes-
sage. The physicians have the
city geographically divided and
have assigned teams to each era.
The Pharmacists Section will
hold an all-city meeting featur-
ing Bob Hall, a Will Rogers ef
rhyme. Nathan S. Shapero, chair-
man of the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign and Samuel M. Bez, pres-
ident of the Pharmacists Service
Group, jointly invite the Jewish
pharmacists of Detroit to attend
a meeting to be held Wednesday,
May 1, at 9 p. m. in the Jewish
Center.
Murry Karble was host at a
workers' luncheon meeting April
24 at the campaign headquarters,
Tuller hotel, at which the work-
ers were assigned to teams.
Hon. J. Howard McGrath, So-
licitor General of the United
States will address an all city
dinner meeting of attorneys in
the English Room of the Book
Cadillac Hotel at 6:30 p. m. Tues-
day evening, April 30, according
to Isadore Levin, chairman of the
Professional Division, who issued
the invitations. Mr. McGrath,
who has recently returned from
Europe, will make his first Amer-
ican report at this meeting.
Food Division
A two month period of inten-
sive organization by the Allied
Jewish Campaign Meat Section
will culminate in a pledging
meeting and Brunch on Sunday,
April 28, 12 noon, at the Belcrest
hotel. Mrs. Joseph H. Ehrlich will
address the group. Heading the
Meat Section as chairman are
Ben Klein and Israel Schlaifer.
The Produce Section meets
Tuesday, April 30 at 7 p. m., in
the Bagley Room, of the Hotel
Statler, for its Allied Jewish
Campaign pledging send-off, with
several pace-setting gifts already
announced. Harry Becker, Cy
Kyte, Louis Rycus and Sam
Schwartz are perfecting plans for
the meeting, as chairmen, with

Local Women's Council
Intallation Wednesday

The annual meeting of the De-
troit Section of National Council
of Jewish Women will take place
at the Book Cadillac on Wednes-
day, May 1, at 12:30 o'clock.
Mrs. Hershel Kreger, retiring
president, will read her annual
report, and new officers will be
installed.
A program will be presented
bye the Music Stludy Club Choral
Group under the leadership of
Dan Frohman, with accompani-
ment by Rose Bassin.
Reservations for the luncheon
may be made through the Coun-
cil office. Mrs. H. J. L. Frank
heads the committee on luncheon
arrangements.

The first series of pledging
meetings in the Food division has
demonstrated the intention of
Jews in Detroit's food industry
to offer full support to the Jews
overseas. Poultry, Fish, super
markets, dairies, bakeries, tobac-
co and confectionary dealers, res-
taurants, bars, and night clubs
have shown full appreciation of
1946 needs.
Arts and Crafts Division
On April 23 a luncheon of the
Printers and Publishers Section
was held at the Standard Club
of the Book Cadillac hotel. Dave
Safran and Herman Lewis Jr.
presided.
On April 25 at 8:30 p. m., the
photographers section met in the
Studio of Hanley Marks, 2119 W.
McNichols Road.
Service Division
On April 26 at 12:15 p. in., a
luncheon of Insurance Section
will be held in the Engliai Grill
of the Book Cadillac Hotel. Mr.
Blumberg and Fred A. Ginsburg
will be present.
