H. Seidman Commend Jewish News on Article
-
Nationwide attention has been given the full-page feat-
ure article by the editor of The Jewish News on Siegfried
Marcus, the first man to invent the automobile, which ap-
peared in our Passover issue, on April 12.
Clarence H. Low of 103 Park Ave., New York, grand-
nephew of Marcus, writes:
"I read with great interest your
article on Siegfried Marcus. This
is the best job done by anyone
so far on Siegfried Marcus, and
I want to compliment you on your
work.
"As Dr. Birkhead (Dr. L. M.
Birkhead, director of Friends of
Democracy) may have written
you, I am a direct descendant of
Siegfried Marcus, who was an
uncle of my father. In other
words, he was my granduncle.
"I have in my possession vari-
ous data which you probably
also have; that is, a pamphlet
from the Austrian Automobile
Club, and also one from an
engineering society.
"I am wondering if we could
get information that the monu-
ment is still standing which I
understand was erected in his
honor in Vienna.
"I am enclosing herewith copy
of radio talk made by Mr. Ket-
tering of General Motors Corp.,
which you probably have seen.
"It had been my intention
these past - years to do something
which would give this great man
his proper place in the scientific
world. I think you have made
a good start.
"I think some of his patents
are outstanding. Of course, it
would take a technical man,
which I am not, to verify certain
claims made.
"I would very much appreciate
if you would • send me six copies
of your April 12 issue, as I
should like to send one to a niece
of Siegfried Marcus, an elderly
lady 84 years old now residing in
this country, and also send copies
to other interested people."

N HIS RADIO TALK on
"Automobile Genesis," delivered
during the General Motor Sym-
phony of the Air program on
July 15, 1945, C. F. Kettering
said:
`:There was still another auto-
motive pioneer—Siegfried Marcus
—who was quite a few years
ahead of those just mentioned but
is not so well known. Marcus
lived. in Vienna around 1860 and
experimented with gas engines
when others were interested only
in steam—one reason probably
being that gasoline, at that time,
was $3 a gallon and could be
purchased only at a drug store.
"Marcus first built a two-cycle,
engine which he mounted on a
car—and directly connected it to
the wheels. To start the engine,
since there was no clutch, it
was necessary to lift the rear
wheels and spin them. This was
not very satisfactory.
"But Marcus did not give up.
For ten years more he experi-
mented, and in 1875—that is ten
years before the Benz and Daim-
ler—he brought out his second
car which is now in the Vienna
Technical Museum. The new car
had many improvements as the
result of his experimentation. It
was equipped with a four-cycle
engine, had a rope drive and de-
clutching arrangement. Steering
was by worm and wheel. as in
modern cars, and the gasoline
was vaporized by a carburetor.
"And to show his forward
thinking he could start the engine
without getting out of the car
by using a lever and a train of
gears. He built three of these
cars. He sold one to the King
of Holland and another to an Am-
- erican, and the third went to the
Museum. Marcus, however, found
one great difficulty with his new
car—the police of Vienna would
not let him operate it on the
public highway—it was consider-
ed entirely too fast and danger-
ous."

FORMER
U. S. SENATOR
PRENTISS M. BROWN, chairman
of the board of the Detroit Edison
Co., chairman of the Golden
Jubilee celebration of automobile
manufacturing in Michigan, com-
menting on the article on Sieg-
fried Marcus, writes:
"I read your story about Sieg-
fried Marcus with deep interest
and I readily confess that it added
considerably to my store of in-
formation about the origin of the
automobile. I want to thank
you for bringing it directly to
my attention.
"Further than that, as chairman
of the Golden Jubilee celebra-
tion, I should express my grati-
tude for an excellent article
which certainly will serve to in-
crease interest in the forthcom-
ing festivities."

NATHAN H. SEIDMAN, presi-
dent of the Inter-Racial Press of
America, writes in comment upon
the article:
"I have read it with great in-
terest. Few, even among the
well-informed, associate Jews
with the invention of the auto-
mobile. The world generally
thinks of Jews as financiers, for-
getting that some of the greatest
contributions to the advancement
of art, science, political and social
philosophy have been made by
Jews."

VIENNA (JTA)—The charge
that the Austrian government is
encouraging anti-Semitism and
is deliberately attempting to - le-
galize the confiscations of Jew-
ish property during the Nazi re-
gime is made here by the news-
paper "Abeiter Zeitung" in an
article reprinted by the official
organ of the Vienna Jewish Com-
munity.
"It is shameful," the arficle
says "to witness how Austria
treats the surviving Jews and
how the government is stubborn-
ly attempting to legalize the rob-
bery, looting, blackmailing, theft
and other crimes committed
against the Jews during the sev-
en years of Nazi barbarism. The
postponement of the promulga-
tion of law to provide compen-
sation for confiscated Jewish
property constitutes nothing but
legalization of the crimes.
"The government is badly ad-
vised—and we believe deliber-
ately so—since in a country of
more than six million it would
be a small matter to give back
what rightfully belongs to about
4,000 persons. To do so, however,
there must exist an honest de-
termination to act against the
hundreds and thousands of Nazis
who are still in high positions.
"Encouraged by the govern-
ment's attitude, anti-Semitism is
beginning to lift its head once
again in Vienna - and throughout
Austria. The incidents which oc-
curred on Sunday, March 24, be-
tween the Jewish sports club
"Hakoah" and the sports club of
the police, are typical. Part of
the spectators provoked as wild
an anti-Semitic demonstration as
might have occurred in March,
1938.

Hunger Strike Ends
In Limited Victory
By J. L. TELLER
Editor-in-Chief
Independent Jewish Press Service
JERUSALEM (JPS)—The four-
and-a-half day hunger strike of
Jewish leaders was called off after
the strikers won a Pyrrhic vic-
tory. The Palestine Government
scored by deducting the Spezia
certificates from the Jewish
Agency's quota and by refusing
to permit, the refugees to arrive
in one group, even under these
conditions. The fault is not the
hunger strikers; rather it indi-
cates falure of the Ghandist
method as applied to the Pales-
tine problem, since the .Admin-
istration ignores demonstrations
of passive nature.
Because of the telegraph strike
here, the hunger strikers could
not consult with American Jewry
on coordinating their actions,
which handicapped Jewish Palest-
tine and reduced the effective-
ness of the strike. The hunger
strikers could not have continued
to fast in hope of obtaining better
terms, because individually and
as a group, they are extremely
important to Jewish Palestine,
and their lives are more signific-
ant than their martyrdom. There-
fore, pressure was brought to bear
from all sides requesting that they
cease fasting.
