Six Rail Bridges
Asks Food for Blasted
by Irgun
Zeilsheim DPs

'On Whitman Avenue'
Opens Here on April 15

Initiate Rabbi Zager
B. B. Lodge April 28

"On Whitman Avenue," one of
the most eagerly anticipated plays
of. the season on Broadway, was
brought to Buffalo on April 10
and comes to Detroit Lafayette
on April 15, before it opens in
New York.
"On Whitman Avenue," the
work of Maxine Wood, (Maxine
Finsterwald of Detroit), stars
Canada Lee, the dynamic Negro
actor who first became prom-
inent in "Native Son," and so
notably played Caliban in the re-
cent production of Shakespeare's
"The Tempest," with Vera Zorina.
In this play Lee has the part
of a Negro returned from war
service who finds himself in-
volved in the most gripping kind
of dramatic conflict, when cir-
cumstances bring him and his
family to live in a neighborhood
previously restricted to whites.
This situation is one that, in
the present difficult housing
shortage, is happening or threat-
ening to happen in all parts of
the country. Touching as it does
on the deepest emotional feelings
of people of all colors, it is the
basis for a play of enormous dra-
matic impact.
Canada Lee and Mark Marvin,
a motion picture producer who
was associated with the John
Steinbeck-Herbert Kline feature
film on Mexico, The Forgotten
Village" are co-producers of "On
Whitman Avenue."

The initiation banquet of the
newly-formed Rabbi Mandel M.
Zager Lodge of Bnai Brith will
be held at the Fort Wayne
Hotel on April 28.
Rabbi Joshua S. Sperka will
be the principal speaker. Isadore

of Fame.

JERUSALEM (JPS - Palcor)—
About 11 miles of a railway track
and the surrounding countryside
in southern Palestine assumed
the appearance of. a battlefield
for more than two hours, the
night of April 2, when large bands
of heavily armed Jews blew up
five bridges and damaged severely
other rail communications be-
tween Ybna and Ashdod, south
of Rohovoth. Heavy explosions
and continuous small arms fire
were heard over a large area.
Almost simultaneous with the
attacks in southern Palestine,
armed Jews blew up the Naamin
bridge, just south of Acro, on
Haifa Bay in northern Palestine.
One policeman was killed and
about 10 British soldiers and Arab
guards were wounded in the at-
tacks. The body of an unidenti-
fied Yomenite Jew was found
buried in the sand near the Arab
village of Shukroir, near Ybna.
Irgun Zvai Leumi, outlawed
military organization, announced
that it was responsible for the at-
tacks.
