Shaarey Zedek Reception
For Rabbi Adler Monday

Chaplain Gives
Sermon March 1

Congregation
Plans Affair

The next monthly Friday eve-
ning get-together service of Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek will
take place on March 1 at 8:15 p.m.
Rabbi Gershon G. Rosenstock
will be in charge of the service

Capt. Morris Adler, rabbi of
Cong. Shaarey Zedek who was
the first Jewish Chaplain to ar-
rive in Japan and who recently
returned to. Detroit on terminal
leave, will be welcomed back
home officially at a reception
arranged by the congregation in
the social hall, next Monday,
Feb. 25, at 9 to 11 p. m.
Rabbi Adler's homecoming re-
ception is being planned by the
officers and board of directors of
the Shaarey Zedek.
The entire community is . invit-
ed to attend.
Last Saturday, Rabbi Adler
greeted the congregation briefly
from the Shaarey Zedek pulpit.
He also visited the Junior Con-
gregation and delivered a short
address to the 200 young people
who conduct their own services
every Sabbath morning.

The sensational new book, "To
Whom Palestine?", in which
Frank Gervasi states the case for
a Jewish commonwealth in Pales-
tine, will be the subject of a book
review sermon by Rabbi Leon
Fram at Temple Israel, Friday
night, March 1, at 8:30, in the
Lecture Hall of the Detroit Insti-
tute of Arts.
At this service Ronald Weber,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur B.
Weber, will celebrate his Bar
Mitzvah. Mr. and Mrs. Weber will
be hosts at a reception after the
service in the Romanesque Hall.
A special musical program in
celebration of National • Jewish
Music Week has been arranged
by the musical staff of Temple
Israel. Cantor Robert S. Tulman
will sing a newly composed ser-
vice, the original work of the
Temple's organist, Karl W. Haas.
In observance of National
Brotherhood Week, Rabbi Fram
is exchanging pulpits with the
Rev. Tracy ,Pullman of the Uni
tarian-Universalist "Church of
Our Father." Rabbi Fram will
give a sermon at the Church of
Our Father, 4605 Cass, at 10:30
a. m. Sunday. The Rev. Pullman's
subject at Temple Israel this Fri-
day night is "The Debt of Liberal
Christianity to Judaism."
At this Friday night's service,
Peter Levin, son of Mr. and Mrs:
Bayre Levin, will celebrate his
Bar .. Mitzvah. His mother, Mrs.
(Lydia) Levin is the founding
president of the Sisterhood. The
congregation will be guests of the
Levins at 'the reception in the
Romanesque Hall.

Stage Varied Program

'Eternal Light' Hailed
Best Religious Program

NEW YORK: The Jewish
Theological Seminary of Amer-
ica and the National Broadcast-
ing Co. received from the Na-
tional Conference of Christians
and Jews a citation of disting-
uished merit for the presentation
of the "best network religious
series, "The Eternal Light", as
part of the Conference's Brother-
hood Week Program.
The award was made Feb. 17

Men's Club of Cong. Shaarey
Zedek presented "Scout Night"
in the Social Hall on Feb. 13.
The presentations prepared by
the Boy Scout and Girl Scout
groups sponsored by Shaarey Ze-
dek were received enthusiastical-
ly and enjoyed by all.
John Kurland, Cubmaster of
Pack 104, presented a showing of
a Den of Cub Scouts in operation
with Mrs. Samuel Perimuter, pos-
sessor of certificate of leadership
from Scout Headquarters, por-
traying the role of Den Mother.
Troop 164 presented comic
take-off on scouting incidents.
This troop is headed by Hubert
Sidlow as Sc6utmaster.
Troop 104 portrayed the life of
Lincoln in the role of defending
lawyer in the trial of "Duff Arm-
strong." Murray Teichman is
their new scoutmaster.
Girl Scouts and Brownies pre-
sented a musical comedy • titled
"Bustles and Fustles".
Twenty - three prizes were
awarded to Scouts leading in the
sale of bonds. Dr. Morris Bur-
stein, chairman of the Shaarey
Zedek bond drive, said that the
scouts sold $156,000 in bonds dur-
ing this drive, and made the
awards for the congregation.
Rabbi Gershon G. Rosenstock
offered the closing prayer fol-
lowed by the singing of the Star
Spangled Banner by Cantor So-
nenklar, after which refresh-
ments were served.
Albert Green, in charge
Scouting activities, presided.

Rabbi Levi to Discuss
'Cong. vs. Community'

"Congregation vs. Community"
will: be discussed by Rabbi
Eliezer A. Levi of Cong. Bnai
Moshe, at late Friday, evening
services, March 1. Cantor David
Katzman will lead the prayers.
A social hour will follow. The
Sisterhood will serve ref cesh-
raents in the banquet hall.

At the Sabbath Eve services
of Temple Beth El at 8:15 p. m.
this Friday, Dr. B. Benedict
Glazer will preach on "Have We
Learned Anything From Past Ex-
perience? A commentary on re-
cent trends in our national life."
The liturgical music will be
rendered by the Temple Quartet
under the direction of Jason H.
Tickton. A social hour under the
auspices of the Sisterhood will
follow the services.

Pontiac Rabbi Will Give
Brotherhood Addresses

Five addresses by Dr. Davin
Schoenberger, rabbi of Temple
Beth Jacob, Pontiac, are sched-
uled in connection with the ob-
servance of Brotherhood Week.
They are:

Council of Churchwomen, Pres-
byterian church, Pontiac.
"Brotherhood—In Peace as in
War, Teamwork," Flint Bnai
Brith.
"Interdependence," youth meet-
ing, Congregational church, Pon-

Grow in Germany," Northern
High School, Detroit.
"Am I my Brother's Keeper?"
Kiwanis Brotherhood meeting,
Rochester, .Mich.

"Jewish Resistance" Theme
Of Habonim .Oneg Shabbat
"Jewish Resistance" will be the
theme of an Oneg Shabbat which
will be held by Habonim, Labor-
Zionist Youth, Friday, Feb. 22,
at 9 p. tn., at 1912 Taylor, corner
of 12th Street.

Anniversary March 10

Meseritcher. Progressive Bene-
fit Society will celebrate its 28th
anniversary March 10. A dinner
dance is planned to be given at
Workmen's Circle, Linwood and
Burlingame. Reservations are be-

The next meeting will take
place at their meeting hall, 11812
Linwood, on Sunday.

the program.

Exhibits Musical Works

In connection with National
Jewish Music Week, to be ob-
served Feb. 24 to March 3,
Shaarey Zedek Library is featur-
ing a display of Jewish musical
works. It is to include the folk
song, the art song, choral works,
orchestral and symphonic music.
There also are books on the his-
tory of Jewish music and biog.-,
raphies of famous Jewish musi•
cians.
Cantor Jacob Sonenklar
contribute" a number of rare
manuscripts and some of his own
musical compositions.
The entire community is in-
vi•ted to view this display.

Rabbi Morris Adler, who re-
cently returned from service, will
deliver the sermon on the topic
"I Rise to Report". His dis-
course will deal with a chaplain's
work and experiences in the
Pacific Theater of War.
After the service in the main
auditorium, there will be an
Oneg Shabbat in the social hall
of the synagogue, in charge of
Aaron A. Silberblatt, chairman
of the Friday evening service
committee. It will consist of
community singing of Sabbath
songs, vocal solos by Cantor
Sonenklar and a question and
answer period conducted by
Rabbi Adler.
Members of the congregation,
their families, relatives and
friends are invited.
Refreshments will be served
by the Sisterhood, in charge of
Mrs. Frank A. Wetsman.
