An impressive gathering of more than 600 persons, rep-
resenting every, walk of life in Detroit Jewry, gathered Sun-
day evening at the Lee Plaza hotel to pay honor to Mrs.
Morris L. (Emma) Schaver, prior to her departure from
New York, this weekend on the Gripsholm, to visit dis-
placed persons camps. *.;>
Mrs. Schaver's mission will be
on behalf of the World Jewish
Congress. The delegation of
which she will be a member will
include H. Leivick, eminent Yid-
dish poet, and Dr. Israel Efros,
noted Hebrew poet and scholar.
Overflow Audience
The evening's program was
carried to an overflow audience
over loud speakers in the dining
hall of the hotel.
A feature of the evening was
the appearance of Henry Siegl,
eminent violinist, who is leaving
to become concertmaster of the
Rio de Janiero Symphony.
Other artists on the program
were Mrs. A. R. (Mildred)
Brasch, Cantor Robert Tullman
and the Halevy Singing Society
Choir, the latter under the direc-
tion of Dan Frohman.
Rose Bassin Stein played the
piano accompaniments.

The evening was arranged by
the American Jewish Congress,
Poale Zion, Jewish - National
Fund, Jewish National Workers'
Alliance, Halevy Singing Society
and Pioneer Women's Organiza-
tion and their affiliated groups.
Speakers included M. Goldof-
tas, A. Meyerowitz, D. Sislin,
Mrs. S. Lichtenstein, Mrs. J.
Schreier, William Hordes, Dr.
William Klein and P. Slomovitz.
Mrs. Schaver, in her response,
expressed the hope that the
World Jewish Congress delega-
tion will be able to bring cheer
to the displaced persons and to
give them the encouragement
they so sorely need in rebuilding
their lives.
58 Trees Given as Tribute
Rabbi Morris Adler, who has
returned from Japan where he
served as Chaplain, and Mrs.
Adler were among the guests,
In honor of Mrs. Schaver, Mr.
and Mrs. William Hordes planted
25 trees in the Schaver Forest
in Palestine. An additional 33
trees were planted in her honor
by the Dorn family, cousins of
the Schavers.
Bnai Brith Lodges Here
Form Bowling League
With all Bnai Brith lodges co-
operating, a new Metropolitan
Bowling League was formed
composed of the following:
Pisgah, 3 teams; Keidan, 3
teams; Marshall, 2 teams; Detroit
Lodge, 2 teams; Brandeis, 2 teams.
Temporary officers are: Harry
Thomas, president, and Dr. Mich-
ael Engelman, secretary.
Committees have been appoint-
ed to write by-laws and to select
the bowling alleys. The tentative
bowling night is Tuesday.
The next meeting will be held
March 22 at the Bowl-O-Drome.

are the rules, in

1. Two annual prizes shall be
offered for books written in the
English language dealing with
the Hebrew and Yiddish lan-
guages or their literatures.
.2._ Translations of- Hebrew and
Yiddish works, such as novels,
short stories, essays, or poetry,
and other works of a belletristic
nature shall be eligible for the
prize, but, in such a case, the
work translated must possess in-
herent worth and the translation
must be of a superior nature.
3. Only two annual prizes of
$400 each shall be announced, but
at the discretion of the Commit-
tee they may be divided in equal
or unequal parts into more than
two prizes.
4. Manuscripts as well as pub-
lished books shall be eligible for
a prize, except when a transla-
tion is involved, in which case
the manuscript of the translation
as well as the original shall be
submitted to the Committee.

Sisters Install
The first in a series of shipments of more than 2,500,000
pounds of matzos and other Passover supplies for 1,400,000
Jewish survivors in Europe from the Jews of America was
en route overseas this week according to an - announcement
from the national headquarters of the unprecedented $103,-
000,000 campaign of the United Jewish Appeal for Refugees,
Overseas Needs and Palestine.
A special Passover program has
been launched by the Joint Dis-
tribution Committee, one of the
three major American Jewish
agencies whose programs are
financed by the United Jewish'
Appeal, to provide for the holi-
day needs of the remnants of the
Jewish people in Europe in their
observance of the first "liberated"
Passover since the outbreak of
World War II.
Matzos for Rumin
Rabbi Leo Jung, chairman of
the J. D. C. committee on cul-
tural-religious activities, has dis-
closed that the J. D. C. will ship
approximately 1,250,000 pounds
of matzos, matzo meal, raisins
and macaroons from the United
States. An additional 1,250,000
pounds of Passover supplies will
be purchased overseas for Jews
in Belgium, Romania, Turkey,
France and Bulgaria.
The newest development in the
J. D. C. Passover program came
with•the announcement that $20,-
000 worth of matzos for Russia
has been authorized for purchase
by the J. D. C. in Palestine.
These supplies will be shipped
through Teheran for distribution
among orthadox groups of Polish
refugees in the Soviet Union.
Jews in Poland will receive the
largest amount of matzos in the
J. D. C. program, according to a
recent J. D. C. cable. Polish Jews
are scheduled to receive 500,000
pounds of matzos from the Com-
mittee.
Shipments to Many Centers
Supplies of kosher Passover
foods for Jews living in the for-
mer concentration camps in Ger-
many now being used as centers
for displaced persons, amounting
to 400,000 pounds of matzos, have
been purchased by the J. D. C. in
Holland and will be distributed
by more than 60 J. D. C. wel-
fare workers in the camps. In
addition, 50,000 pounds of maca-
roons and 66,000 pounds of
raisins will be shipped from the
United States to them for distri-
bution. Fifty thousand liters of
sacramental wine for Jews in the
camps have also been ordered by
the Committee in Jerusalem. The
wine will be shipped to France,
once the wine center of the world,
for , transshipment to German
centers. •
Displaced Jews in Austria will
receive 150,000 pounds of matzos.
Hungary's Jews are scheduled
for at least 400,000 pounds of un-
leavened bread.
Shipment of matzos to Shang-
hai, China, Greece, Yugoslavia
and Italy are expected to arrive
in those countries from New York
next week. The4,shipment now en
route to Shanghai consists of 85,-
000 pounds of matzos and 15,000
pounds of matzo meal.
The S. S. Leif Olson en route
to Athens is carrying the J. D.
C.'s consignment of 25,000 pounds
of matzos to meet the Passover
requirements of the 10,500 Jews
in Greece, supplementing an
UNRRA shipment of 42,000
pounds of matzos to that country.
