ACTIVITIES IN SOCIETY

Mrs. Sidney J. Allen was chairman of the Detroit Arrange-
ments committee of the General Assembly of -Council of Jewish
Federations and Welfare Funds, held last weekend at the Statler
and Temple Beth El. The committees were composed as follows:
Admissions—Mesdames Harold C. Allen and Eugene Arnfeld, co-
chairmen; Mesdames Samuel H. Epstein, Harvey H. Goldman,
Lawrence J. Michelson, Myron D. Stein, Emil Stern, James Wine-
man. Registration—Mrs. Max Frank, chairman; Mesdames Lewis
H. Carlson, Aaron Carlstein, Simon H. Diamon, Adolph Ehrlich,
David H. J. Feinberg, Seymour J. Frank, Harry Glick, H. E. Jacob,
It. R. Kallman, Samuel B. Keene, Aaron Kurland, Milton Maddin,
Max Osnos, Don S. Rogers, Nathan H. Schermer, Irving Swaab,

Leo, J. Zuckermans Observe
Golden Wedding on Sunday

South Pacific where he saw ser-
vice in New Zealand and New
Caledonia, he was assigned to
the European Theater. After
successive assignments in Scot-
land, England, France and Bel-
gium, he participated in the in-
vasion of the Rhineland and the
occupation of Germany. He was
awarded battle stars for the
Ardennes and Rhineland cam-

paigns.

Shortly after V-E Day, he was
redeployed directly to the Paci-
fic and was on Luzon when
Japan surrendered.

Mr. and Mrs. Albert Meister and daughters, Martha and Jo Ann,
have moved to their new home, on Ewald Circle.

Maj. and Mrs. Max H. Myerson of 3265 Boston are in Los
Angeles for several weeks' visit.

Out of Army, Dr. Stolar
Resumes Practice Here

Mr. and Mrs. Leo J. Zuckerman of 18090 Cherrylawn will be
honored on their golden wedding anniversary at a reception at
the Book Cadillac Italian Gardens from 4 to 7 p. m. on Sunday,
Feb. 17. They have two children, Mrs. Sidney J. Allen and Elmer
V. Zuckerman, and two grandchildren, Lt. James R. Zuckerman,
and in Luzon, and Jay W. Allen.

Dr. and Mrs. Leo M. Franklin of Edison Ave. left on Tuesday
for Palm Beach where they will spend the remainder of the winter.
Mr. and Mrs. John A. Heavenrich of Longfellow Ave. have left
for Coronado Beach, Calif., to be guests at the Coronado Beach
Hotel for a month.
Mrs. Eugene Sloman and Mrs. I. L. Polozker of the Belcrest
Hotel have left for Palm Beach where they will spend the remaining
winter months.

Mr. and Mrs. Julian G. Wolfner of Burlington Rd. left on Thurs-
day to spend a few weeks in Palm Beach, Fla.
Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel J. Harris of Gloucester Rd. left on Tues-
day to spend a few weeks in California.
Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hartman of Shrewsbury Rd. left last
Saturday for Hot Springs, Ark., for a few weeks' stay.
Miss Janet Laib of Strathcona Dr., who is attending the Uni-
versity of Michigan, is spending the between-semester vacation
visiting with friends in New Orleans, La.
Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Wittleshofer of Boston Blvd. left on Thurs-
day for a stay in palm Beach, Fla.
Mr. and Mrs. Moe Diamond and their daughter of Whitmore
Rd. left on Sunday by motor for a stay in Los Angeles, Calif.
Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Lieberman and daughter, Marilyn, of
Birchcrest Dr. have returned from a few weeks' stay in New
Orleans, La.
Mr. and. Mrs. Wallace Newton of Boston Blvd. have returned
from a few weeks' stay in Miami Beach.
Rabbi Jacob Rothchild of Pittsburgh, who recently received his
discharge after three years' service as a Chaplain in the U. S. Army,
is spending a week here as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice
Schiller of Glynn Ct.
Mr. and Mrs. H. N. Rosenberg of Boston Blvd. left on Sunday
for Los Angeles where they will spend the remainder of the winter.

Mr. and Mrs. Maurice H. Coggan (LaVerne Weiss of Beverly
Hills, Calif.), have returned from their honeymoon and are resid-
ing at 3342 Chicago Blvd. In their honor, Mr. and Mrs. Albert
Oppenheim of 3765 Pasadena held open house last Saturday night.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kramer of Chicago were the guests in
Detroit for two weeks of Mrs. Kramer's brothers and their sisters-
in-law, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Holbrook and Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Hol-
brook. •
Lt. (jg) Richard Barrar, USNR, has returned to Great Lakes,
Illinois, after visiting with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Martin J.
Barrar of Ohio Ave.
In honor of the forthcoming marriage of Miss Arlene •Karbal
to Morton Mehler, a miscellaneous shower was given by Mrs.
Joseph Kirman, Mrs. William Krochmal, Mrs. Louis Corman and
Mrs. Abe Corman on Jan. 16, at the Lee Plaza Hotel; a personal
shower by Mrs. Al Fineman and Miss Gladys Gallow on Jan. 18 at
the home of Mrs. Morris Weinger on Leslie Ave.- a miscellaneous
shower by Mrs. Adolph Mehler and Miss Ruth Mehler on Jan. 22
at Huyler's in the Fisher Bldg; a kitchen shower by Miss Ida
Karbal and Mrs. Phillip Forman on Jan. 24 at the Book Casino; a
miscellaneous shower by Mrs. Joshua Karbal, Mrs. William Karbal,
Mrs. Joseph Karbal and 'Mrs. Sy Karbal on Jan. 30 at the Book
Cadillac Hotel.
Mrs. Elizabeth Penfil, chairman of the Legislative Commit-
tee of Detroit Section of American Jewish Congress, went to
Washington Jan. 28 in behalf of the Fair Employment Practices
Commission. She was a member of a delegation representing
labor and church organizations.
Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Kraemer and children of Kraemer's
Olympia Hotel, Mt. Clemens, have returned from a four months'
vacation in Miami Beach. Their son, Sidney, joined them after re-
ceiving his discharge from the army. In service four years, he was
overseas 14 months.
Mrs. Sarah Levin of 1600 Seward has left for an extended
visit to Miami Beach, Fla.
Mrs. Harry Fine will entertain in honor of her children, Mr.
and Mrs. Elliot R. Fine, at open house Sunday, Feb. 17, at the home
of her sister, Mrs. Richard A. Cott, 1210 W. Chicago. Mr. Fine has
just returned from two years overseas duty with the U. S. Army.
Miss Norma Shapiro, bride-elect of Feb. 24, was honored at a
shower by her sister, Mrs. Nathan Lux; was entertained by Mrs.
Oscar Adelson and will be given a bridal-spinster party on Feb. 15.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wineman of Hamilton Rd. left on Tuesday
for a stay in Havana.

Max Barahal Returns
To Law Practice After
Four Years in Service

Dr. Charles Stolar recently re-
ceived his honorable discharge
from the U. S. Army Medical
Corps after serving three years.
Dr. Stolar, who cared for the
sight of thousands of soldiers at
the Eye Clinic, Station Hospital,
Camp Roberts, Calif., largest in-
fantry replacement center, has
resumed his optometric practice
at 115 State. He is the son of
Mrs. and the late Mr. Joseph
Stolarsky. Dr. Stolar is now
active in the organizing of the
AVC, newly formed veterans'
national association.

Mr. and Mrs. Leo J. Zucker-
man's 50th wedding anniversary,
which will be observed at a re-
ception this Sunday from 4 to 7
p. m., in the Italian Gardens of
the Book Cadillac Hotel, will be
an occasion to recall Mr. Zucker-
man's interesting career as one
of the pioneer merchants in
Detroit.
Coming here with his family
37 years ago, Mr. Zuckerman
conducted a store on the site of
the present J. L. Hudson Co.
Bldg. on Woodward Ave. He
leased that site to Hudson's. He
also owned and operated Elmer's

which was located on the pres-
ent site of Russek's.

The Zuckermans were married
in Chicago, Feb. 18, 1896. Mr.
Zuckerman, 70, was born in
Chicago. Mrs. Zuckerman; 68,
was born in Philadelphia. They
are members of Temple Beth El.
They have a daughter, Mrs.
Sidney J. Allen, and a son, Elmer
V. Zuckerman, and two grand-
children, Lt. James R. Zucker-
man, now in Luzon, and Jay
W. Allen. They reside at 18090
Cherrylawn.
