Pupils in Jewish Schools Observe
Hamisha Asar b'Shevat, Jan. 17
The school committee of the
Jewish National Fund Council of
Detroit has issued a call to
parents and pupils in local
Jewish schools to join in observ-
ing Hamisha Asar b'Shevat on
'Jan. 17 and to utilize the festival
to plant trees in Palestine.
M. Goldoftas, in behalf of the
committee, has released the fol-
lowing call:
"Jan. 17 will be observed as
Hamisha Asar b'Shevat, the
Jewish Arbor Day, a day which
is considered of special signifi-
cance to the Jews of Palestine.
"It is a tradition among all
Jews, as a blessing for Palestine,
to plant trees on soil of the
Jewish National Fund.
"Hamisha Asar is becoming the
festival of all Jews everywhere.
The Nazis have murdered 6,000,-
000 Jews—among them hundreds
of thousands of our children. We
call upon those who are fortu-
nate to live in freedom to carry
with pride the responsibilities
for our future, and we ask them
to make Hamisha Asar the sym-
bol of our hopes and faith of
planting and building.
"We urge parents to make
Hamisha Asar a holiday for
home observance; to give a place
of honor to the JNF, Blue and
White box on this occasion; to
discuss the future of Palestine
with the children on this festival
and to plant trees in the name
of every member of the family
through the JNF."
