Joseph Silverstein, 13-year-old
son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard
Silverstein of 2448 Clairmount,
won a violin scholarship at the
Curtis Institute of Music, Phila-
delphia.
The first. seven years of his
Studies, Joseph was taught by his
father. The past year, his teacher
was Josef Gingold, concertmaster
of the Detroit Symphony Orches-
tra. At Mr. Gingold's suggestion
he played for Efrem Zimbalist at
the Curtis Institute. Mr. Zim-
balist was so impressed that
Joseph was accepted at once into
his class.
Mrs.. Silverstein accompanied
Joseph to Philadelphia where he
will remain to carry on his
studies. Mr. Silverstein joined
them there for a visit.

Rosenwald Post Endorses Legion
Action Against College Quotas

Julius Rosenwald Post No. 218
of the American Legion, at a
recent meeting, unanimously en-
dorsed a resolution adopted by
the American Legion Depart-
ment of Illinois condemning the
un-American practice of many
universities and other education-
al institutions which are resort-
ing to a quota system.
Leaders of the Rosenwald
Post have expressed the hope
that a similar resolution will be
adopted by the national conven-
tion of the American Legion in
Chicago next month.
The resolution adopted by the
Illinois Department, which re-
ceived Rosenwald Post's en-
dorsement, reads:

WHEREAS, under the G. I. Bill of
Rights, the Congress of the United
States has made available for all
properly qualified veterans the op-
pOrtunity to complete their college
education or obtain specilized train-
ing at certain selected universities,
and
WHEREAS, it now appears that
the quota systems of one kind or
another, in effect in many of these
institutions before the war, discrimin-
ating against students because of
their race, color, religion or national
origin, are now being enforced against
honorably discharged veterans of
World War II, and
WHEREAS, the continuance of this
un-American practice is not • only a
threat to the fundamental principles
of the G. I. Bill of Rights, but also
to American unity and the ideals of
democracy and human decency, now,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by
the American Legion, Department of
Illinois; that we deplore this un-

Music Study Club Plans

The Music Study Club announ-
ces a student voice contest in
memory of one of its charter
members, Lillian Gordon Alpern.
An award of $200 was present-

students, -male and female, ages
18 to 23. Preliminary auditions

ly, and, equally important, it is a
denial of the fundamental American
concept of the equality of education-
al opportunity, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that
the U. S. Veterans Administration be
required to deny the privtleges of the
G.I. Bill of Rights to those institutions,
which discriminate against honorably
discharged veterans because of their
race, color, religion or national ori-
gin, and the governors of their res-
pective states be instructed to re-
move the names of those colleges
from their officialy accredited lists,
and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that
any educational institution, which dis- -
criminates in its policy or policies
of admission, because of the appli-
cant's race, color, creed or national
origin, shall be denied legal tax ex-
emption of all kinds and character,
and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that
appropriate action be taken by the
American Commission of the Depart-
ment of Illinois, to correct the un-
American conduct herein set forth,
and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that
copies of this Resolution be sent to
the National Headquarters of the
American Legion for passage at the
next National Convention.
