Wayne Avukah Opens New Year's Program Rosenwald Installs Of Saturday Joseph Silverstein, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Silverstein of 2448 Clairmount, won a violin scholarship at the Curtis Institute of Music, Phila- delphia. The first. seven years of his Studies, Joseph was taught by his father. The past year, his teacher was Josef Gingold, concertmaster of the Detroit Symphony Orches- tra. At Mr. Gingold's suggestion he played for Efrem Zimbalist at the Curtis Institute. Mr. Zim- balist was so impressed that Joseph was accepted at once into his class. Mrs.. Silverstein accompanied Joseph to Philadelphia where he will remain to carry on his studies. Mr. Silverstein joined them there for a visit. Rosenwald Post Endorses Legion Action Against College Quotas Julius Rosenwald Post No. 218 of the American Legion, at a recent meeting, unanimously en- dorsed a resolution adopted by the American Legion Depart- ment of Illinois condemning the un-American practice of many universities and other education- al institutions which are resort- ing to a quota system. Leaders of the Rosenwald Post have expressed the hope that a similar resolution will be adopted by the national conven- tion of the American Legion in Chicago next month. The resolution adopted by the Illinois Department, which re- ceived Rosenwald Post's en- dorsement, reads: WHEREAS, under the G. I. Bill of Rights, the Congress of the United States has made available for all properly qualified veterans the op- pOrtunity to complete their college education or obtain specilized train- ing at certain selected universities, and WHEREAS, it now appears that the quota systems of one kind or another, in effect in many of these institutions before the war, discrimin- ating against students because of their race, color, religion or national origin, are now being enforced against honorably discharged veterans of World War II, and WHEREAS, the continuance of this un-American practice is not • only a threat to the fundamental principles of the G. I.
