Telshe Yeshivah to Speak
Before Membership
Rabbi Mordecai H. Gifter, dean
of men at the Telshe Yeshivah
in Cleveland, executive director
of Young Israel in that city, will
be the guest speaker at the serni l-
annual membership meeting of
Yeshivath Beth' Yehudah on
Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 9 p. m. .
At this meeting; which will be
held in the Yeshivah building,
Dexter and Cortland, reports
will be given on the curricula,
finances, and achievements of
Beth Yehudah.
The Yeshivah • now numbers
505 students, and its member
ship list has passed the 800 mark.
Rabbi Gifter was born in
Baltimore. He received his early
training at the . Chofetz Chaim
Yeshivah in Baltimore, after-
wards at the Rabbi Isaac Elch-
anan Yeshivah in New York.
From there, he proceeded to Lit-.
htiania, where he studied at the
Yeshivah . of Telshe. When the
war broke (Art, Rabbi Gifter re-
turned to America by way of
Siberia and the Orient. He was
for some time a member of the
faculty of Rabbi Isaac Elchanan
Yeshivah. He subsequently oe-
cupied Rabbinical positions in
Baltimore and Waterbury, Conn.
When the Roshei Yeshivah of
Telshe re-opened their "famous
Yeshivah in Cleveland, Rabbi
Gifter joined the staff as dean of
men.

NW Hebrew Con. Men
Hold Meeting Monday
The Men's Club of the North-
west Hebrew Congregation and
Center, under the leadership of
its new president, Manny Lax,
*ill meet Monday at the Shaa-
rey Shomaim, 15700 Muirland.
The social committee, under
the co-chairmanship of Hy Stor-
chari and Max N. Haidy, is ar-
ranging the Hanukah celebration
to be conducted jointly with the
Sisterhood of the congregation.
The meeting on Monday will
feature sports celebrities. It was
arranged by, the chairman of the
prodram committee, Malcolm Riv-
kin. iRefreshments will be served.
The Bowling league, under the
presidency of David Miller, haS

New Rabbi Will Teach
Class at Shaarey Zedek
Rabbi Gershon George Rosen-
stock, new rabbi pro-tern of
Shaarey Zedek, will teach a class
in the Philosophy of Judaism be-
tween 4:30 and 5:30 p. m. every
Monday. Students 13 to 17 are
eligible.
Eternal Light Presents
'Unbroken Circle' Sunday
"The Unbroken Circle", a ra-
dio drama by Morton Wishen-
grad, which• deals with the life
of Rabbi Albert Siegfreid Bettel-
heim, will be presented on . the
Eternal Light Program, Sunday,

As President of

Dr. Jacob R. Marcus, prOfessor
of history at Hebrew Union Col-
lege, will be the guest speaker
of the Men's Club of Temple
Israel at its opening dinner at
Hotel Statler Tuesday,' Oct. 30,
6:30 p. m.
Dr. Marcus, a Jewish scholar
who was born and educated in
America, was a classmate of
Rabbi Leon Pram at Hebrew
Union College. He was a disciple
Of the great historical genius,
Dr. Gotthard Deutsch.
While he received most of his
training at Hebrew Union College
in Cincinnati, he also studied in
Europe and especially in pre-
Hitler Germany.
He received his doctorate de-
gree from the University of
Berlin. Among the important
historical works he has written
are: "The Rise and Destiny of the
German Jew" and "The Jew in
the Medieval World".
David J. Cohen was installed
as president of Congregation
Bnai David, succeeding Joseph
A. Block, who served in that
capacity for four years.
Other officers' who assumed
office at the installation dinner
are: Joseph Gorman, vice-presi-
dent; Mandel Shifman, treasur-
er; Dan Otis, secretary.
Mr. Cohen announced the ap-
pointment of the following as
members of the board of trus-
tees: Joseph A. Block, Sidney
Gorman, Louis Phillips, Louis
Please, Charles Rogers, Hymen
Rothenberg, • Myron J. Solomon,
Saul Waxman and Morris W.
Zack. AssoCiate members of the
board are: Isadore Gruskin, Jack

president, presided at the pro-
gram which preceded the instal-
lation. An address was deliver-
ed by Rabbi J. S. Sperka and
a report on activities under .his
presidency was given by Mr.
Block. Cantor. Hyman Adler
participated in the program.

Plans Celebration
Of Siyum Hashas
Yeshivath Chachmey Lublin is
preparing for the celebration of
Siyum Hashas—the conclusion of
the year's study of the Talmud—
on Nov. 18.
In addition , to the local rabbis
and laymen, prominent visiting
rabbis will attend this celebra-
tion.
Rabbi G. Frankel, principal of
the Parochial School, addressing
the recent memorial service in
tribute to 'Rabbi M.' ShapirO,
founder. of Yeshivath Chachmey
Lublin in Poland, announced that
there are 12 gradeS in the ,Par-
ochial School and that the num-
ber of pupils in increasing.
At this .event, Rabbi 13,.. Notole-
yitz, guest speaker, was intro-

National Refugee Service
Moves to Larger Office
National Refugee Service, Inc.,
the major agency for aiding the
adjustment of refugees in the
U. S., moved its office to 25 Ann
St., New York 7, N. Y. The
agency's new quarters provide
adequate office space for its
many postwar services, Joseph E.

In Shanghai Under. Japanese
NEW YORK, (JTA)—Malnutri-
tion and starvation caused the
death of 1,497 German-Jewish
refugees who were marooned in
Shanghai in 1942 and 1943, ac-
cording to a report received by
the HIAS from its Shanghai of-
fice, Isaac L. Asofsky, executive
director, disclosed.
