Apparently Misread the
Interim Report
Miss Esther R. Prussian, director of the Detroit Service

Group, fund-raising arm of the Jewish Welfare Federation
of Detroit, announced this week that volunteers are now
being enlisted for the forthcoming War Chest campaign.
Included in the War Chest quota are all the local, na-
tional and overseas Jewish relief, reconstruction, education-
al agencies.
The major Jewish fund which derives its income from
the War Chest is the Allied Jewish Campaign of the Jewish
Welfare Federation. The Allied Jewish Campaign provides
funds for the American Jewish Joint Distribution Commit
tee, United Palestine Appeal and National Refugee Ser-
vice, and the overseas relief and reconstruction efforts de-
pend entirely upon the success of the War Chest for their
income in Detroit.
Two Kinds of Volunteers Needed
Miss Prussian points out that two kinds of volunteer
workers are especially needed: convassers and team captains.
Canvassers go from door-to-door and seek contributions from
housewives, retired persons, small business places and the
like. Team captains organize the canvassers, assign blocks,
distribute campaign materials and make reports on progress
of the campaign. All volunteers can work in their neigh-
borhood.
Nearly everyone who works at it gets a feeling of satis-
faction for having participated in a really worthwhile enter-
prise. It is also a way to meet your neighbors as well as
fellow campaign workers.
The many hundreds of volunteer workers who have
worked in previous War Chest and Allied Jewish Campaign
drives, as well as new workers, are asked to call Miss Prus-
sian at COlumbia 1600 to offer their services.

Jacob Blaustein, speaking in
behalf of the Council of Jewish
Federations and Welfare Funds,
commenting on the statements
issued by the committee that was
formed to oppose budgeting, said
this week:
"It is apparent that the Opposi-

Page Five

tion Committee has misread or
misinterpreted both as to content
and record of vote an interim re-
port which was presented in Feb-
ruary to the Board of the Coun-
cil for its consideration.
"Only five members of the
Budget Research Committee of
14 were definitely opposed to the
principle of advisory budgeting
at that time and since then one
of these five has declared him-
self in favor of the proposal.
Moreover, a more recent vote in
June reaffirms the fact that a
majority of the members of the
Budget Research Committee is in
favor of the national advisory
budgeting proposal which is be-
ing submitted to the member com-
munities of the Council."

Dr. David Prato Back
As Rome's Chief Rabbi

JERUSALEM (JTA) — P r o f.
David Prato was named as Chief
Rabbi of Rome, a place vacated
last year by Dr. Israel Zolli, who
became converted to Catholicism.
Dr. Prato left here this week
for Italy.
Dr. Prato headed a Jewish
school in Florence for 20 years
before becoming Chief Rabbi of
Alexandria, Egypt, in 1927, a
position he held until he came to
Rome in 1936. He resigned the
Chief Rabbinate of Rome after
the Mussolini government adopt-
ed an anti-Jewish policy and
came to Palestine to live.

Thousands Leaving
Uzbekistan Haven

.

MOSCOW (JPS) — Large-
scale migration from Uzbekistan
has begun for those Jews who,
fleeing the western districts,
found refuge there during the
war years. Daily thousands are
boarding special trains that will
carry them to their former
homes in the Ukraine, Belo-
russia, Lithuania and Moldavia.
One train alone, consisting of
60 cars, bore 2,500 of the re-
turning refugees and the coming
weeks will witness the departure
of thousands more.
These Jews had found sanc-
tuary in the hospitable Uzbek
district while Kiev and Odessa,
from which they had fled, were
still smouldering ruins, and
- there they established them-
selves to their new surroundings
and making temporary homes.

Sermons on Holy Days Stress
Responsibility of U. S.
Jewry to Help

NEW YORK.—More than 1,600
Reform, Conservative and Ortho-
dox rabbis throughout the nation
appealed last Friday to the Jews
of the U.S. for unprecedented
support of large-scale relief and
rehabilitation overseas and the
upbuilding of Palestine to bring
about the reconstructon of the
shattered lives of the surviving
Jews of Europe, as the beginning
of the Jewish New Year 5706
ushered in an intensive nation-
wide campaign in behalf of the
United Jewish Appeal.
Emphasizing that the beginning
of the year 5706 coincides with
the ending of an era of bitter suf-
fering and ruthless oppression
for the Jewish people, the rabbis
pointed out that those who sur-
vived the scourge of Hitlerism
now look to American Jews to
place them on the road to recov-
ery and rehabilitation in the
present critical transition period.
They urged generous response
to the campaign of the UJA
which provides the resources for
the programs of the Joint Dis-
tribution. Committee, the United
Palestine Appeal and the Na-
tional Refugee Service.
Support for UJA is provided
in Detroit by the Allied Jewish
Campaign, whose income comes
from the War Chest, whose cur-
rent drive will commence on

Oct. 8.
