Jewish Youth's

LISTENING

By Danny Ra in

HY BRODER was a fine man
. His death is sadly mourned
• . As president of the Jewish
Center he had a great number of
friends . . . All who knew him
liked his pleasant ways . . . His
smile was catching . . . As an
active leader in the community
he was respected by everyone ...
He got things done . . . and was
always quick to praise those who
helped in any way.
The heart that failed at 47 had
a particular spot for the youth in
the community . . It was his
aim to cultivate a thoroughly
rounded out prograni for the
younger folks . . Only a few
months ago, he mentioned to us
about having some wonderful
ideas along those lines . . . If
they were anything like the ones
he told us before, Jewish youth
has suffered a tremendous loss.

LEAVE IT TO the guys in
uniform to think up ways and
means of putting over a practical
- joke . . . Jerry Wetsman, softball
start in the. Times League' and
one of the city's top badminton
players, had a few pulled on him
during his 18 month sojourn in
service . . . but one still sticks.
in his mind. •
The fellows were having a
hectic nine innings and Jerry
came up ready to knock the ball
into the next county . . The
pitcher served him one of those
soft lobs right over the platter
and Jerry swung • . . at a nice
ripe grapefruit colored to look
like a softball ... His dungarees
resembled a new-fangled break-
fast dish . . and he swears he
never did get all the seeds out
of his mouth.

CAPT. NORMAN KOLIN came
home a pretty much be-medalled
young gent . . . He was a bomber
pilot with the 8th Air Force .. .
Won the Silver Star, Oct. 20,
1944, for some super doings over
Holland . . . Two Distinguished
Flying Crosses for being a flight
leader and returning from Han-
over on two engines . . . Seven

A LADY sauntered into Harry
Bauman's insurance office in the
Book Building to inform him
that she wanted to cancel out .. .
Said she was getting tired of
paying on ,ther husband's policy
. . . That she didn't feel it should
be kept up, anyway, because he
already had been dead for three
years.

THE _ BNAI BRITH Bowling
League, which allocated a special
fund to sponsor the younger
fellows in their athletic activi-
ties: . . and help get Jeturning
servicemen back in the. swing of
sports . . . will throw a party for
the boys at Lola Park Valley,
Aug. 29 . . . Clothier Harry
Thomas chairrnans the affair and
promises quite a shindig. ‘-‘

SIMON BROWN, owner of the
Detroit Army and Navy store on
Cadillac Square, really does
things in a big -way . Gave a
large party complete with flow-
ing champagne and a huge
tower-like wedding cake . to
celebrate daughter Gertrude's
Chicago marriage . 7 , and the
bride and groom weren't even
there.

A BOOK was sent to Cpl.
Gerald Phillips while he was still
in the states . . Didn't get to
read too much of it but enough
to become engrossed, before
someone stole it from him on a
train . . . While going from Biak
to Leyte . . . a year later .. . he
found one on the boat . . . de-
cided to read on . . . and opened
the cover to find his name on the
inside. It was his own book!
We he gets home, Gerald has
a definite "I Do" date with very
cute Lylian Ginies.

WHEN THE info about Japan
throwing in the towel hit the
air-waves, Mrs. Bertha Adelman
ran onto her porch and excitedly
asked her neighbor if she heard
the good news 7 . "Yes, isn't it
wonderful?" . . 7 "It's more than
that," said Mrs. Adelman, "it's
terrific!" . . Then the woman
next door curved her eyebrows
and asked, "How in the world
did you know so soon?" . . . and
Mrs. Adelman told her she just
heard it on the radio . . . "Well,"
replied the lady, "I don't know
what you're talking about, but
my daughter just had a baby
girl!"
