' He also disclosed that Col. Carl
W. Hansen, commandant of the
Armed Forces Institute, upon
whom • the War Department has
placed responsibility for distri-
bution of the anti-Jewish ma-
terial, had an academic • back-
ground prior to entering the
Army, and specialized in educa-
tion and educational psychology.
He is a graduate of the Univer s ity
of Chicago where he took his mas-
ter's degree and has received the
degrees of Doctor of Education
from the University of Minne-
sota. He was a teacher of history
in a university, the name of
which was not given, and, at one
time, he held the post of super-
intendent of schools In Quincy,

Ill.

The Navy Department, mean-
while, continued to refuse to
make any comment on the
charge that it used the same
course. A spokesman said that
he understood that the course in
question had been withdrawn
and was not in use now. He
added that the "cognizant office"
had no statement to make.

Catholic Group Asks for
Investigation into Prejudice
NEW YORK, (JTA) — Secre-
tary of War Henry L. Stimson
and Secretary of the Navy James
Forrestal were requested_ to in-
stitute immediate investigation
into the distribution of anti-Jew-
ish and anti-Catholic statements
in a correspondence course con-
ducted by the U. S. Armed
Forces Institute, under the aus-
pices of the Army and Navy.
The demand came from the
Committee of Catholics for Hu-
man Rights, which also urged
removal from any activities con-
nected with the education of the
U. S. armed forces of all per-
sons responsible for the inclu-
sion of the objectionable state-
ments - in the correspondence
course.
Subtle Blow to War Effort
The Catholic group also asked
that the War Department and
the Navy Department investigate
all courses conducted by the U.
S. Armed Forces Institute "in
order to assure us that the vic-
tory won upon the field by the
blood of our soldiers is not lost
by systematic and concerted at-
tempts, - no matter how uninten-
tional, to prey upon the intelli-
gence of our youth in the armed
services."
"Anti-Catholicism and anti-
Semitism are attitudes danger-
ous to minority • relationships
within the United States and are
tools of anti-democratic forces,"
the letter of the Catholic organ-
ization said. "This subtle blow
to the war effort through proPa-
gation of un-American attitudes
must . .be repudiated by the War
and Navy Departments' in order
to serve notice that such atti-
tudes will not be tolerated now
and in the future."

Course Scored by CIO,
Catholics in PM Report
Wilbur H. Baldinger, writing
in PM, quotes prominent Cath-
olic and CIO leaders as con-
demning the anti-Semitic USAFI
course.
Among those who issued state-
ments demanding an investiga-
tion and protesting against the
teaching of anti-Semitism in the
army correspondence course are:
National CIO War Relief Com-
mittee, Irving Abramson, chair-
man; Committee of Catholics for
Human Rights, Prof. Emanuel
Chapman of Hunter College, di-

Mississippian Attacks
Jews in Senate Speech
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — A
vitriolic attack on Jews and
Negroes was made last week by
Senator Theodore Bilbo of
Mississippi in a two-day fili-
buster against FEPC appropria-
tions, during which he warned of
a "revolution in this country" if
the bill for the establishment of
a Permanent Fair Employment
Practice Cominission is passed.
Senator Bilbo read a statement
prepared by Rep. John Rankin,
also of Mississippi, and one of
the bitterest -opponents of the

FEPC, listing FEPC employees
as Jews, "niggers" and "white
Gentiles." Emphasizing that pop-
ulation figures show a proportion
of 20 Gentiles to every Jew in
America, Bilbo denounced the
FEPC for allegedly compelling
different races to live and work
side by side.

Monitor Brands Speech
"Reminiscent of Goebbels"
Richard L. Strout, Washington
correspondent of the Christian
Science Monitor, reporting the
speech by Senator Bilbo, wrote:
"It was a scene upon which
Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi propa-
gandist, might have looked down
with double satisfaction, for not
only was race bitterness being
stirred and accentuated but the
very power of the democratic
majority seemed to be frustrated
and set at naught."
PM, labeling one of the stories
in which the Bilbo speech is re-
ported with the headline "Bilbo
Act Has Goebbels Squirming in
Grave," quotes the following from
his speech:
"The niggers and the Jews of
New York are working hand in
hand. That's why you find Eu-
gene Meyer—a Jew—(owner of
the Washington Post) denouncing
me and saying I'm bankrupt."
"The few Jews in MisSissippi
are exemplary -citizens. They all
vote for Bilbo."

Cdiumbia Recording Corp.
Puts Radio Drama on
Records, on Sale Here

On V-E Day American lis-
teners who tuned in on their
radios to hear of the collapse of
Nazism, heard a previously unan-
hounced broadcast from the
Hollywood Studios of the Co-
lumbia Broadcasting Company.
This feature, "On A Note of
Triumph," by Norman Corwin,
had been in Preparation since
D-Day, 11 months before it was
heard on the air.
No radio • program in history
created .such a stir , or received
such immediate and widespread
praise. Five days later it was re-
broadcast to satisfy the insistent
demand from those who had
heard it and those who had
missed it. Simon and Schuster
brought the program out in book
form. It became an overnight
"best seller" and the presses
have yet to catch up with the
demand.
New the Columbia Recording
Corp: has released an album of
records, giving the entire pres-
entation exactly as it was heard
on the air.
It is difficult to describe just
what this program is. It partakes
of epic . poetry, drama, short
story and other art forms. It is
a magnificent, beautiful piece of
writing that gains immeasurably
in auditory presentation.
"Note of Triumph" is a fitting
monument to the terror of the
Nail regime and 'a fitting re-
minder . . "lest we forget." It
deserves a place in every home

Catholic' - Ukrainian Weekly Inducts New Business and Professional Chapter of American

Saul R. Levin Presides
to Gain Circulation

PHILADELPHIA (JTA) — The
ancient accusation that Jews
"murdered Jesus Christ" and that
they are "materialists and fanat-
ical enemies of Christ and His
Church" is- revived in an article
in the Catholic weekly newspaper
"Shlyakh" (The Road) issued
here in the Ukrainian language
under the editorship of the Rev.
Basil Feddish.
The paper carries on its mast-
head an appeal from the Bishop's
office, asking priests "to do every-
thing in their power to have the
paper reach every house," and to
see that it is passed from hand to
hand." Signed by Bishop Con-
santyn (Bohachewsky) the ap-
peal says: "Every religious Uk-
rainian should read this paper.
We hope that the paper will find
distributors in every parish, in
every locality, and that it will
also find faithful friends and sub-
scribers."
The article, in which the Jews
are presented as a nation of "sin-
ners," is written by the Rev.
Joseph Ananevich.
"Since the Jews murdered
Jesus Christ, they have been
scattered over the world, deprived
of a state, a language, priests,
etc.," the author writes, adding:
"The Jews remain the same to
this day. They are materialists,
fanatical enemies of Christ and
His Church.
"During this war, they have
been brutally massacred by the
Nazis, but whether this is the
end of their sin and their punish-
ment by God is hard to say. God
predicted that the time would
come when they would repent
and be reconverted to God. God
will forgive them and let them
become Christians, - members of
the Catholic church."

Mrs. Kliger Renamed
Maimonides Women's
Group's President

Mrs. David Kliger was re-
elected president of the Ladies'
Auxiliary of Maimonides Medical
Society at the meeting held at
the Wayne County Medical So-
ciety Clubrooms last Saturday.
Mrs. Morris Witus and Mrs.
Marvin Levy were chosen vice-
presidents; Mrs., Oscar U. Shapiro,
treasurer; Mrs. Henry Small, cor-
responding secretary; Mrs. Si
Farbman, recording secretary;
Mrs. Samuel Rosenthal, auditor.
In her annual report, Mrs.
Kliger stated that an important
plank in the - organization's pro-
gram is to provide facilities for
servicemen's affairs, to entertain
wives of members in service, in
addition to cooperating with the
War Chest, the Red Cross, USO
and other civic movements.
The wives of members in serv-
ice overseas have formed a group
known as WOOPS—Wives of
Overseas Physicians.

Addressing an audience of 250 men who were inducted
into membership in the newly-formed Business and Pro-
fessional Chapter of the American Jewish Congress, at a
luncheon at the Book Cadillac Hotel on Monday, Dr. Stephen
S. Wise, president of the American and World JewishCon-
gresses, -made an impassioned plea for untiring efforts for
