the JWF and we know that this
is the only agency which is able
to assume the responsibility for
the building and the maintaining
of a hospital. I hope that all the

small group and will contribute
large treasury gifts to the Jewish

THE JEWISH NEWS
Friday, April 13, 1945
NEW YORK—President Roose-
velt called for a revival of the
spirit of religion to solve the na-
tion's problems in a message
made public April 5 at the cen-
tenary dinner of Congregation
Emanu-El.
The President's message read:
`The gravity of the times which
mark the one hundredth anniver-
sary of the establishment of -Con-
gregation'Emanu-E1 quickens in
the hearts and souls of thinking
men and women an appreciation
of their dependence on the
strength that can be found only
in the everlasting reality of reli-
gion.
"It seems, -therefore, fitting
that I should again declare that
no .greater thing could come to
our land today than a revival of
the spirit of religion—a revival
that would stir the hearts of men
and women of all faiths to a re-
assertion of their belief in God.
I doubt if there is any problem
that would not melt away before
the fire of such a spiritual awak-
ening.
"The great majority of Ameri-
cans find religious unity in a
common Biblical heritage—the
heritage of the Old Testament
Whether our allegiance is to the
tenets of Christian revelation or
to the ancient teaching of Israel,
we all hold to the inspiration of
the Old Testament and accent the
Ten Commandments as the fund-
amental law of God.
"It is well for us, therefore, in
the face of global war and world
upheaval, to emphasize the many
essential things in which we, as
a nation, can find unity as we
seek solution of the momentous
problems before us."
Organization Enlarged
As time advanced this organ-
ization enlarged its membership
and charged each woman an an-
nual fee of $2. In addition, mem-
bers make voluntary contribu-
tions on joyous occasions, and in
memory of departed ones. The
organization also began sponsor-
ing an annual affair. Proceeds
were used towards extending
medical aid to many needy
families.
