THE JEWISH NEWS
Quotation of the Week
"I am familiar with all the doubts and suspicions concerning the all-day
Jewish school and with the opposition to it. Nevertheless, there are in the
United States almost 10,000 private and parochial schools on the elementary
level. To be exact, there were in the school-year 1937-1938, 9,992 such schools,
with an enrollment of 2,240,651 pupils—roughly 10% of the elementary school
population in the country. I believe that we have the right to educate at least
part of our children in schools of our own.
"As for the Talmud Torahs and the afternoon Hebrew schools, we must
infuse them with a new spirit and dispel the indifference which pervades them.
In the nursery schools in the Soviet Union, the children are given toy blocks
and bricks which are too heavy for any one child to lift. Thus, from their
early childhood, they learn to practice cooperation. We must train our children
to meet the challenge of the hour. They must be taught to regard themselves
as builders of our people. Not empty philanthropy, but a brotherly, national
spirit should be the guiding force of our schools.
"We should also develop the social ideal in our pupils. Without the im-
plementation of this ideal there is little hope for Jewish education and the
Jewish school. This was proven conclusively in Bulgaria, where the education-
al program was conducted entirely in Hebrew. Formal schooling was not
enough. Jewish youth groups, which the pupils joined on graduation from the
Hebrew schools, were formed. A similar type of organization exists in South
Africa. Here in America only a start has been made in this direction.
"The hour is crucial. We CAN determine the course of the future.. The
history of the next decade will reveal whether we are little men or great Jews."
DR. ZEVI SCHARFSTEIN, Professor of Hebrew and Jewish
Education at Teachers Institute, New York, in Article,
"Rebuilding Jewish Education After the War," in Jewish
Education Magazine.
