Rabbis Told Not to Accept Position in Synagogue Which
Repudiated Rabbi Englander's Protest on Teach-
ing Nativity_ Story in Schools

NEW YORK (JPS)—Rabbini-
cal schools and rabbis were ad-
vised by the Synagogue Council
of America not to fill the pulpit
vacancy at Congregation Ahavath
trael, Kingston, N. Y., whose
Rabbi Harold Englander left
after the congregation's presi-
dent repudiated h i s protest
against relating the nativity story
to children at public school. ,
Rabbi Ahron Opher, speaking
for the Synagogue Council, said
that "no (rabbinical) institution
or self-respecting rabbi would re-
spond" to the Congregation's re-
quest.

Rabbi Englander's written pro-
test report to the Superintend-
ent of Schools was approved . by
Rabbi Herbert Bloom of the Re-
form Congregation, Rabbi Bern-
ard D. Gershuny of the Ortho-
dox Congregation, and the local
chairman of the Anti-Defamation
League. Congregation Ahavath
Israel failed in its attempt to get
the other two congregations in
Kingiton to back its repudiation

Rabbi Opher revealed, - at a
meeting of the three congrega-

JUDGE 01,

Congregation Ahavath Israel
"worsened their position in the
community and did great harm
to the prestige of the spiritual
leadership of American Jewry;
that decent Christians had in-
dicated that the congregation
showed a deplorable lack of re-
spect for its own spiritual lead-
ership whose only fault lay in a
zealous loyalty to its own religi-
ous tradition." His position was
upheld by the Anti-Defamation
League which was first on the
scene and had called in the
Synagogue" Council of America.
The American Jewish Commit-
tee and American Jewish Con-
gress- representatives previously
took a similar position.
-
As to Rabbi Englander's status;
Rabbi Opher says: "We were in-
formed that the Congregation
had taken no action on England-
er's resignation and when asked
by the press as to what his status
was, stated that, since the Rabbi
voluntarily left town, no action
was necessary on the part of
the Congregation."
