American - Jewish Problems
to Be Discussed at Six
Weekly Programs
Prof. John F. Shepard, presi-
dent of the Civil Rights Federa-
tion, announces the opening of
the second Institute series, deal-
ing with the problems of minor-
ity peoples under the auspices of
that organization, called the "In-
stitute on the American Jewish
People." The director of the In-
stitute is the Rev. Ellsworth M.
Smith, director of the War
Emergency Commission of the
Detroit Council of Churches.
Beginning on Jan. 8, the Insti-
tute will run for six consecutive
Monday nights at the First Con-
gregational Church, Woodward
and Forest, and will deal with "A
United Program to Eliminate
Anti-Semitism for the Preserva-
tion of Democracy."
Jan. 8—Dr. Joshua Block, Chief of
the Jewish Division of the New York
Public Library.
Jan. 15—Rev. Ben Richardson, execu-
tive secretary of Protestant Ministerial
Association.
Jan. 22—Dr. Horace Grinnell, noted
New York musicologist.
Jan. 29—Leonard Golditch, secretary
of the National Committee to Combat
Anti-Semitism.
Feb. 5—Michael Sayers, co-author of
'Sabotage!"
Feb. 12—A Panel Discussion-Modera-
tor, Ernest Goodman, Labor Attorney.

the Detroit Presbytery.
2. A Program for the Negro People:

The Institute on the American
Jewish People is based on a four-
point action program, according
to Prof. Shepard, .that: 1. Anti-
Semitism must be brought out
into the open for discussion; it
thrives on secrecy and silence; 2.
The recognition that anti-Semi-
tism is a threat not only to the
Jews but to the liberty of all the
people; 3. Extensive education on
the background and history of
the Jewish people to dispel mis-
conceptions and prejudices; 4.
Public exposure and criminal
prosecution of thoSe engaged in
organized anti-Semitism.

Sermon on Mixed
Marriage on Jan. 5

For Servicemen
"Earth and High Heaven," the
novel on mixed marriage, will
be the subject of Rabbi Leon
Fram's sermon at the Sabbath
Eve service of Temple Israel
Friday night, Jan. 5, at 8:30, in
the Lecture Hall of the Detroit
Institute of Arts.
The services will be featured
by the Bar Mitzvah of Arthur
Weisman, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Seymour Weisman, formerly of
Har Sinai Congregation of Balti-
more. After the services Mr. and
Mrs. Weisman will be hosts to
the congregation.
On Jan. 10, Rabbi Fram will
be guest of the faculty and stu-
dents of Youngstown College,
Youngstown, 0., and will lead
several discussion groups on
"The Role of the Jew in the
History of Civilization."
This Friday night, Rabbi Fram
will deliver his annual New
Year Prophecy on the -subject,
"A Prophecy for 1945."
At the Sabbath Eve services
at Temple Beth El this Friday
evening, at 8:15, Dr. B. Bene-
dict Glazer will preach the ser-
mon . on the topic "What Does
the Future Hold for Us—Some
Thoughts Suggested at the End
of the Year 1944."
Included in these services will
be a special service of interces-
sion for the safety 'of our boys
in the armed forces and for the
victory of the United Nations.
A social hour will follow the
services.

A banquet honoring the Vaad
Horabonim is being arranged by
the Merkaz L'chizuk Hatorah
V'Yahadus in cooperation with
the Kosher Butchers' Association
is to be held at the Bnai Moshe
Synagogue, on Jan. 21, at 6 p. m.
Proceeds will enable the Merkas
and the Vaad to continue their
work.

munity Center.
Rabbi Eliezer Silver of Cin-
cinnati, national chairman of the
Yeshivah's Board of Education,
and president of the Union of
Orthodox Rabbis of the United
States and Canada, will be the
guest speaker of the evening.
Rabbi Abraham M. Hershberg,
rabbi of Bnai Reuben Congrega-
tion of Chicago, will greet the
audience in name of Chicago's
Rabbinical Council.

Yeshivath Beth Yehudah will
open, in addition to classes al-
ready in operation, a new 1B
grade and the third and fourth
years of its Day School. This de-
partment operates under the su-
pervision of the Detroit Board
of Education and Board of
Health.
The children who receive a
full course in English' and He-
brew subjects from 9 a. m. to 4
p. in. are allowed free time for
play and recreation after school
hours.
Class programs and text books
are those employed in the city
institutions, including such sub-
jects as music, arts and crafts,
nature study, drawing, reading,
writing, spelling, arithmetic, his-
tory and geography.
Parents who have children in
the first four years of elementary
school may enroll them at the
Yeshivah Day School. Bus trans-
portation and hot lunches are
provided. The new term starts
at the end of January, 1945. The
Yeshivah is located at 12301 Dex-

Rabbi Fram to Serve
On State CoMmittee
Eugene B. Elliott, head of the
Department of Public Instruction
of the State of Michigan, has
invited Rabbi Leon Fram of
Temple Israel to become a mem-
ber of the Committee on Inter-
cultural Understanding.
The committee works with the
Curriculum Planning Committee
of the State of Michigan to into-
duce into the public schools
lessons and programs on mutual
understanding and goodwill be-
tween the various racial, cultural
and religious groups.
Rabbi Israel Schneerson, a
member of the eminent family of
the Lubawitcher Rebbe, is in De-
troit conducting an emergency
drive for the United Lubawitcher
Yeshivoth.
Contributions are being accept-
ed at the office of Vaad Haye-
shivoth, 12219 Dexter.
It is announced that these
Yeshivoth have a total enrollment
of 1873 and that they operate at
an annual expense of $250,000.
Recently an additional expense of
$100,000 was incurred for a new
building for Central Yeshivah of
Brooklyn.
