Rabbi M. Silver, known as the
"Slonimer Rebbe," has lived in

that will be given by his congre-
gation honoring Rabbi Silver on
Sunday, Dec. 24, at 6 p. m., at

Dr. Finkelstein, Dr. Hershman Deliver Principal Addresses:
Srere, Shulman and Cohen Also Speak; Shetzer, tvlarwil,
Blumberg and Zackheim Assist in Ceremony

Impressive ceremonies, attended by more than 1,000
members of Congregation Shaarey Zedek and members of
their families, marked the burning of the mortgage on the
synagogue which became mortgage-free last Sunday evening.
Abraham Srere, a member of the board, acting as chair-
man of the evening, briefly outlined the synagogue's 82-year-
old history.

Harry M. Shulman, vice-presi-
dent of the synagogue, who was
general chairman of the commit-
tee on arrangements for the cele-
bration, officially opened the
meeting and expressed gratitude
to all who assisted in the effort
to wipe out the mortgage.
Safeguard Traditions
Calls were sounded to the
gathering to safeguard and keep
alive Jewish traditions by the
two principal speakers — Dr.
Louis Finklestein, president of
the Jewish Theological Seminary
of America, and Dr. A. M. Hersh-
man, for the past 37 years rabbi
of Shaarey Zedek.
"No greater contribution can
a Jew give to America than to
be a good Jew," declared Dr.
Finkelstein. "The Democrat is
spirit of America has its origin
in the preachings of the prophets.
The Jew must turn back to his
faith. He must guide others to
turn back to their faiths.
"The things of the spirit unite
men, while the things of the body
divide them. One must think not
of the moment but of the distant
future. The whole spirit of the
law can be summed up in Hillel's
famous saying: 'Love thy neigh-
bor as thyself.' All else is com-
mentary."
Moral Leadership
Dr. Finkelstein called on Amer-
ica to assume the moral leader-
ship of the world. He asserted
that both the German and the
Japanese in pre-war years tried
to imitate America, but they only
saw the tinsel, they did not un-
derstand that America's greatness
sprang from its Democracy, that
it was founded on things ,of the
spirit. •
Dr. Hershman called upon the
Congregation to live in the spirit
of the Maccabees. "It has been
the faith of the Jews of Europe
to die nobly. It is the destiny of
the Jews of America to live

nobly. Everywhere in Europe
synagogues have been burned.
Here in America it _ has been
given to us to burn the mortgage
on the synagogues. This is a chal-
lenge to us to give our lives' to
God."
Lists 3 Types of Jews
Dr. Hershman listed three
types of Jews: Those who want
less of Judaism, those who are
content with Judaism as it is and
those who want more of Judaism.
He called America the arsenal of
Jewry.
Harry Cohen, Shaarey Zedek's
president, read a message to the
gathering from the synagogue's
associate rabbi, Chaplain Morris
Adler, who is now on duty in the
Pacific.
The mortgage was burned by
Isaac Shetzer, assisted by Morris
Blumberg, Robert Marwil and
Maurice H. Zackheim, all past
presidents of Shaarey Zedek.
Cantor J. H. Sonenklar, assisted
by a five-piece string orchestra,
sang appropriate selections.
A reception was held in the
social hall after the ceremonies
and refreshments were served at
beautifully arranged tables.
