AFTERMATH
Now it can be told that among those
who took a very active part in drumming
up hate against Roosevelt in the national
election campaign was Edward E. Rume-
ly of New York City . . . Mr. Rumely,
during the first World War, was sen-
tenced as a German agent and served
time in the Atlantic penitentiary . . .
During the 1944 campaign he was direc-
tor of the Committee for Constitutional
Government, an organization sponsored
by publisher Frank E. Gannett, which
campaigned for Governor Dewey . . . And
Rumely is now under indictment for
contempt of court for refusing to divulge
to a Senate Committee the sources of the
funds for his campaign expenditure.
,- Advice to the Republican Party: Now
that the 1944 campaign is over it would
be a good idea for‘you to take time out
, to cleanse. your house of the gentry who,
as gleefully reported by Washington col :
umnist John O'Donnell, supported Thorn-
: as E. Dewey because they were "damned
sick and tired" of "turning the country
over to Frankfurter, Rosenman, :Hillman
and Dave Niles" . Which reminds us
to warn you to put no credence in this
same Mr. O'Donnell's pre-election predic-
tion that a fourth Roosevelt term would
see Mrs. Anna- M. Rosenberg of the W.MC
in the post of Secretary of Labor . .
Not that Mrs. R..mightn't make good but
Mr. O'Donnell'S announcement was made
for the specific purpose of garnering anti-
Semitic votes for Dewey. •

It's time to look seriously into the ac-
tivities of C. Leon De Aryan of Atasca-
dero, Calif., editor of "The Broom," a
pro-Fascist newspaper . . . "The Broom"
was named in a July 1942, Federal in-
dictment as one of the agencies participa-
ting in a plot against the United States
armed forces—yet it still circulates.
We join Hollywood's Hedda Hopper
in wondering why the screen doesn't
bring forth a good film on a Jewish
theme . . Hedda reports that not long
ago Sid Silvers had a wonderful story
about a Jewish boy in the war, and in-
terest in it ran high among Metro pro-
ducers—until one day the idea came up
at an executive meeting . . . Since then
the theme has been smothered in dead
- silence, which has also been the fate
of other. Jewish stories of late . . Is
Hollywood afraid to r.emind America
, that Jews exist, and therefore leaving
the job to the Gerald L. K. Smiths?.
Try This Little Trick
A Formula for the Sixth War Loan
Maybe you've seen this done before. Try-it and amaze your friends
—and yourself. Fill an ordinary glass tumbler full of water—right up
to the top. Take a handful of nails, about. fourpenny size, and begin
dropping them point first into the glass. Ask your guests how many
they think you can drop in without spilling the water. Some will say
two or three—Some 10. But each nail displaces only an infinitely small
quantity. So the answer is 50 or 60—or even a hundred, if you're care-
ful.
But the hundred-and-first will finally spill the water. It's the same
way with that small bond you buy, that extra hour of work you put in
on your war job. By itself, it means very little. Even with a lot of
others, it still means very little. But sometime, somewhere, somebody's
bond, somebody's extra hour is going to be the one that does the trick!
Keep buying—keep working—until the final bell!

ANOTHER FDR STORY
Now the FDR election stories are being
told by the scores.
: Credit this one to Dr. Azriel Eisenberg,
director of the Bureau of Jewish Educa-
tion of Cleveland. It is about Hymie who
rushed into his home with the news:
"Marne, Roosevelt won by a landslide."
"Taka", replied Mame, "Gott zu dank-
en. Gebensht zollen zein unsere lands-

ELECTION AFTERTHOUGHT
Our country is basically sound. • The
people are not frightened by Red scares.
They ignore the rantings of isolationists.
That makes America great.
President Roosevelt now has the man-
date from the people to demand more
loyal support from Congress. The people
will back him in his program for do-
mestic and international decency.

TRIBUTE TO JUDGE FRIEDMAN
Any man who polls more than 300,000
votes in Wayne County can justly feel
proud that he has been honored by his
fellow-citizens.
This is the tribute that the citizens of
our community paid to Judge William
Friedman.
Of course, it is small consolation to re-
ceive such a high vote and to lose the
election by a very small margin.
(Ironic, isn't it, that the man who de-
feated Judge Charles Rubiner also should
have defeated Judge William 'Fried-
man?)
But—Judge Friedman was up against
the name of a man whose brother had
served on the Circuit Court Bench and
is now in the United States Senate; whose
brother figured prominently in the news
as the man who exposed graft conditions
in Michigan.
The defeated candidate for the Circuit
Court had almost unanimous support of
the three Detroit daily newspapers, most
of the community weeklies, labor, the
Bar Associations and other groups. But
the voters are apparently more influ-
enced by the sound of .a name than they
are by endorsements.
For the Jewish community, Judge
Friedman's defeat is cause for natural
regret. There are 90,000 Jews in De-
troit, without a single one of us in an
elective office. We sincerely believe that
there should be, and we regret that so
many causes militate against it. Perhaps
our own inactivity in political circles is
partly -responsible for this condition.

WEIZMANN AND SILVER
More than a year ago, this column pre-
dicted that Dr. Abba Hillel Silver of
Cleveland will be considered, when the
proper time comes, as Dr. Chaim Weiz-
mann's successor to the Presidency of the
World Zionist Organization and the Jew-
ish Agency for Falestine.
Now, there is serious talk that Dr.
Weizmann, whose 70th birthday will be
occasion for worldwide celebration the
end of this month, may be expected be-
fore long to assume the post of president
of the Jewish Commonwealth and that
Dr. Silver may then be called upon th
head the world Zionist movement.
If and when that time comes, it is
difficult to think of a more suitable name

LORD MOYNE
The late Lord Moyne was a man of
contradictions. In May, 1940, he con-
tributed £1,000 to assist the migration to
Palestine of Polish Jews, saying it was
the best haven for them. In 1941, how-
ever, as Colonial Secretary, he upheld
the White Paper which barred Jewish
immigration opposed the raising of a
Jewish army, and took a definitely anti-
Zionist position.

ROOM SHORTAGE
Palestine's room shortage is. incom-
parable. One - of the Hebrew papers re-
cently carried a cartoon shoWing a bridal
couple asking the rabbi to lend them the
canopy after the cermony so that they
might have "a roof over their heads."
The Jerusalem police have yet another
worry—the pranks of waifs breaking
street lamps in the city's finest quarters.
Some claim that these "waifs" are Arabs
who have not learned as yet to like
electricity. Incidentally, the Jerusalem
District CommisSioner is reported to be
an opponent .of electricity and similar in-
novations for Jerusalem. He would keep
the city intact as - a Museum.
