JDC Shipping Clothing,
Food to Jews in PoIand
With Aid of War Chest
An important announcement made public this
week by Isidore Sobeloff, evecutive director of the
Jewish Welfare Federation, in behalf of the War
Chest, revealed that first material aid going directly
into liberated areas of Poland for assistance to surviv-
ing Jews will be sent immediately to the Jewish Re-
lief Committee in Lublin by the American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee in the form of 50 tons of food
and clothing.
This important relief effort is being made pos-
sible with funds now being- raised by the War Chest
of Metropolitan Detroit, which includes- the Allied
Jewish Campaign and its 55 overseas, national and
local agencies as well as the United Jewish Appeal for
Refugees, Overseas Needs and Palestine—the great
American relief agency which includes the Joint Dis-
tribution Committee, the United Palestine Appeal ant
the National Refugee Service.
The 50 tons of food and clothing have been ordered
by the JDC for shipment from Teheran to the Jew-
ish Relief Committee in Lublin, for distributon among
the needy Jews who have been rescued from the Nazis.
Nazis.
In addition to these supplies valued at $250,000,
which will be transferred from JDC stockpiles in
Teheran, the JDC has appropriated another $250,000
for the purchase in the United States and elsewhere of
additional commodities to be used in this important
relief effort in behalf of Polish Jews. •
The action of the JDC follows an exchange of cables
with Dr. Emil Somerstein, for many years prior to the
war a co-worker with the JDC, and climaxes the ef-
forts of the JDC to return to a major scene of its re-
lief - activities prior to the outbreak of World War IL

"The Jews of Poland have been special targets of
Nazi brutality," Joseph C. Hyman, Executive Vice-
Chairman of the JDC, explained in announcing the
emergency program. "The need for the materials we
are sending to Poland has been a long-standing one.
"The food and clothing will be of immediate value
to the comparatively small number of Jews remain-
ing," he continued. "It is our earnest hope that further
shipments of food, clothing and medicaments can be
made in the immediate future."
