Richards Says N. Y. Times
Treats Jewish News Fairly
Director of Jewish Information Bureau Criticizes Villard's
Book, 'The Disappearing Daily,' That
Says Paper Is Prejudiced
.
Disputing statements made by Oswald Garrison Villard
in his latest book, "The Disappearing- Daily" (Knopf) , which
' were quoted in the review which appeared in The Jewish
News on June 16, Bernard G. Richards, director of the Jewish
Information Bureau, 103 Park Ave., New York, writes the
following interesting letter to The Jewish News:
Editor, The Jewish News:
I could not help noticing your
recent review of Mr. 0. G.
lard's book, "The Disappearing
Daily" with special reference to
the New York Times, etc., be-
cause it dealt with some events of
the recent past in which we have
both been so much interested. As
a fell -Iw-historian J am afraid
that you will, on second thought,
not relish the idea of conveying
Mr. Villard's notion - that the New
York Times under the late
Adolph S. Ochs, "refused to print
the British report of the Polish
pogroms against the Jews except
as a paid advertisement."
This was the Sir Stuart Samuel
report of 1921 and because of
dissatisfaction in Jewish circles
with -.summaries of the same
which appeared in the American
press, the late David Schapiro
who was then publisher of The
Day inserted the whole document
as a paid advertisement in the
New York Times. This, however,
in no way justifies the curious
impression left by Mr. Villard
that the subject had not been
treated as news and that - the
Times was interested in,obtain-
ing advertising.
Close .AsSociation
I happened to have enjoyed
some pretty close association
with Mr. Ochs and I know that
he often went out of his way to
publish things in the interests of
our people and even in the in-
terests of Zionism though he per-
sonally dissented from that idea.
I know also how gracious he was
in extending his hospitalityto
men like Dr. Schmarja Levine,
Nahum Sokolov, and Isaac
Greenbaum, whom it was my
privilege to introduce to him.
Also, I had something to do with
a very important general com-
mittee of national scope Which
he provided with a generous
fund for investigating on the spot
the oppressions of Jewish and
other minorities of Romania.
In the light of this you may
have hesitated before giving
further circulation to Mr. Vil-
lard's sweeping and exaggerated
dictum that: "Actually one hears -
it often said that the Times is
both anti-Semitic and pro-Cath-
olic." •
material about Zionism and Pal-
estine, as it does about all mat-
ters of Jewish interest, than any
other newspaper in the 'United
States. This is a separate issue in
Which we have a .thity to press
our argument, but we surely can-
not advance it to any extent by
injecting the confused notions
and accepting the defamatory
hear-say of an outsider.
Extreme Pacifism
It is probably due to his ex-
treme pacifism and up-side-down
liberalism that Mr. Villard shows
no interest in Zionism or Pales-
tine whatever; but his pro-
nounced bias does prompt him to
write with sympathetic approval,
'almost with enthusiasm, • about
the NeW York Daily News which
with its isolationism and ill-dis-
guised hankering for fascism of-
ten comes pretty close to encour-
aging real and not imaginary
anti-Semitism. Yet your eulogis-
tic review of his book says noth-
ing about this and a devoted
Jewish newspaper like your own
comes along with the hechser
and repeats, the loose and off-,
hand dictum of an eccentric goy
charging with anti-Semitism a
great American newspaper which
in and out of season denounces
every form' of racial hatred and
prejudices. Hayetochun?
With personal regards,
Yours sincerely,
•BERNARD G. RICHARDS.

Goering's Explanation
Hermann Goering is reported
to have roughly jostled an
ian gentleman of dignified bear-
ing while on a visit to Rome, be
ford the city was occupied by
the United Nations, and the lat-
ter, failing to recognize the mas-
sive Marshal for the moment,
demanded an apology.
Arrogantly, Nazi number two
snapped: "I am Hermann Goer-
ing. Now what have you to say
to that?" -
The Italian . nobleman bowed.
"As an excuse that is not
enough," he said, "but as an ex-
planation it is ample."

A Vote to Re-Elect
Assertions Unfounded
Mr. *Villard's assertions that
the New York Times under the
present publisher, Arthur Hays
Sulzberger, has failed to report
and to voice American indigna-
tion against the Nazi assaults on
and butcheries of the Jews,, is
equally general and unfounded.
Anyone who reads this paper
regularly would know that a
clOse examination of its pages for
the last few years would reveal
hundreds of dispatches from Eu-
rope and other news stories and
articles, including a large num-
ber • of editorials describing and
condemning the indignities and
cruelties to which our people
have been subjected and de-
manding redress.
I am of course fully aware of
and deplore. as much as anybody
the unfortunate controversy we
have had with Mr. Sulzberger on
the subject of Zionism. But here
too our criticism and protests are
bound to be tempered by the
fact that the New York Times,
after all, publishes more news
