Exalts Religious Role
In the course of . his comments
on anti-Semitism, • A r,c h bishop
Mooney said:
"Catholic tea chi n,g _directly
and by manifold implication em-
phasizeS the dignity of the hu-
man person which anti-Semitism
outrages. Catholic teaching ex-
alts the historic religious role of
the Jewish people, and glories
in - the heritage f r om Judaism
'which is an essential element in
"This is what Pope Pius XII
had in mind when, referring to
the words every priest recites
in the Mass, he said: 'Abraham
is • called our patriarch and an-
cestor. Anti-Semitism is not
compatible with the sublime
reality of the text. It is a move-
ment in which Catholics cannot
participate. We are spiritually
Semites.' "

The • resolution presented by
Rabbi Fram pointed to the Nazi
aims to exterminate the , Jews,
referred to the martyrdom o
2,000,000 who have already per-
' iShed and to the heroism of the
members of the underground
movement, commended Presi-
dent Roosevelt for setting up the
War Refugee Board, and urged
the following action:
Prodigious Task
the prodigious task involved. We
ask that every encouragement be
offered neutral countries ' to
which fugitives may escape, to
give refugees TEMPORARY
shelter pending the victory of the
United Nations and the redistri-
bution of the fugitives to their
home', or to new homes. We ask
that every possible gate that can
be opened to receive refugees.
and to give them PERMANENT
homes, be opened wide. We ask
that all artificial and arbitrary
barriers, that now prevent refu-
gees from going to places where'
homes and welcome await them,
shall be removed. Every day,
every hour, every minute counts.
In the name of our own honor
and the integrity of our civiliza-.
tion we ask the speediest and the
most:. effective action to rescue
the victims of premeditated mur-
der, to arrange for their shelter,
and to provide them with .perma-
nent and secure homes,"
Pales tine_ .._ Demand

Before - this risolutfon was
adopted '. unanimously by the
gathering, an amendment, offer-
ed by JoS.hda Joyrich, was adaPt-
ed incorporating a demand that
Palestine be opened for the set-
tlement of large numbers , of
refugees.

In an interesting address,
Mayor Jeffries condemned big-
otry and urged -that action be
taken to save the unfortunate
sufferers from Nazism.
Mayor Jeffries stated in his
address that it seemed to him
inconceivable "that men could
be as cruel to men as have been
the Nazis to the Jewish people."

Silent on Anti-Semitism
MONTREAL (.ETA)—The Ca-
Congress . this
week made public a statement
expressing regreat at the fact
that "not one wOrd. of public
protest or - public: expression of
disapproval" has been uttered by
any of the responsible members
of the Provincial Government of
Quebec, or the clergy, condemn-
ing the anti-Jewish acts in Que-
bee City„ which culthinated in
the recent attempt to burn down
the new synagogue there.
"Whilst the Jewish community
appreciates the statement' attrib-
uted to Attorney General Leori\
Casgrain that 'this Province . is
one where freedoin Of worship
exists in its complete form,' it
is regrettable that these senti-
ments are apparently not shaped
by many' influential citizens of
this Province, and 'certainly not
by the Majority of the civic au-
thorities of Quebec City;" the
statement says.
