Dr. Schwartzbart, Dr. Szerer Named on Committee to
Probe Charges of Mistreatment of Jewish Soldiers In
Polish Army; Groups Assail Court-Martial

LONDON, (JTA)—The Polish military cOmmanffl, has con-
firmed 10 of the 21 sentences imposed by a court-martial on
Jewish soldiers who left the Polish armed forces because of
anti-Semitism, it was stated here this week.
The other 11 sentences` weresuspended by the high command.
The 21 Jewish soldiers had been sentenced by a Polish court-
Martial • to terms from one to two • years for ,absenting themselves
from their units without leave. The convicted soldiers are under
detention in military barracks under British control.

It also was reported that .17 Polish officers and men accused
of anti-Semitic activity will be tried by court-martial, it was
revealed by Prof. M. Heitzman, chief of the political department
*f the Polish Ministry of Defense, addressing a meeting called
to protest the mistreatment of Jews in the Polish forces.
Resolutions were adopted demanding immediate punishment
of those responsible for anti-Semitic conditions in the Polish
army and welcoming the appointment by the Polish National
- Council of a committee to investigate the status of Jews in the
Polish armed services.
LONDON, (JTAl—The charge that Jewish soldiers are being
mistreated in the Polish Army resulted this week in the appoint-.
ment by the Polish National Council of a commission to investigate
the position of the Jews in the Polish armed forces and the extent
to which anti-Semitism is being practiced there.
' The commission is composed of six members of the Council, in-
eluding the two Jewish members, Dr. Ignacy Schwarzbart and Dr.
Emanuel Szerer. The proposal to appoint such a commission was
-made by Schwarzbart and was adopted by the Council after a de-
bate which lasted more than four hours.
The resolution adopted by the Council provides that govern-
-.Mental authorities are to plaCe at the disposal of the commission all
necessary documents and that complete 'secrecy is guaranteed to
witnesses whb are asked for testimony. The commission will re-
port its findings to plenary session of the Council,.,which functions
,,.as a parliament-in--exile.
The immediate release of the 21 Jewish soldiers was demanded
in a resolution adopted at a mass-meeting called by the National
Council of Civil Liberties in Manchester.
The resolution also demanded that the Jewish soldiers in Axe
Polish Army be given the right "to opt for other Allied armies
where they can freely join in the battle against the Fascist tyrants."
The case of the soliders was presented this week to Polish
'President Wladyslaw Raczkiewicz by .Dr. Schwarzbart. The Presi-
dent discussed for a full hour with Dr. Schwarzbart the position

Polish Government Urged to Outlaw Anti-Semitism
NEW YORK, (JTA.)—The American Representation of the Jew-
ish Socialist underground 'movement in Poland this week issued a
-statement protesting against the sentences imposed by a Polish
-court-martial on 21 Jewish soldiers who left the Polish Army be-
cause of anti-Semitism and applied for admission into the British,
forces.
The protest emphasizes that the Jewish Socialist Party "Bund"
has always called on the Jews of Poland to join the ranks of the
Polish Army. The trial of the Jewish soldiers has proven- that the
reactionary elements in the rank -S of the Polish armed forces are
still actively and freely spreading anti-Jewish propaganda, the pro-
test says.
A warning against the possible indoctrina-
tion of American prisoners of war in Germany
with Nazi anti-Semitism is sounded by Jewish
Comment, official organ of the World Jewish
Congress here.
The further development of Haifa, Palestine,
as a terminus for oil from Aralia, was dis-
cussed by American and British experts here
who have reached tentative agreements on the
principles to govern the development and dis-:
tribution of world oil resources, it was revealed
in Washington, Secretary Hull officially an-
nounced that the Anglo-American experts
dealt with matters relating to oil production
in the Middle East,. particularly the proposed
Trans-American pipe line and the Iraq
Petroleum Company's project for an additional
pipe line from Kirkuk, Iraq, to Haifa, Palestine.
The one 'hundred Jewish refugee families
recently arrived in Montreal, have been greeted
by an attack in Le Moraliste, a newspaper 'after
the style of Father - Coughlin's Social Justice
in the United States and Julius Streicher's
Stuermer An Germany. These 100 are the first
of 100,000 Jewish .refugees whose arrival in
Canada is being engineered by Jews, the news-
paper alleges.

Havana Zionist leaders announced the suc-
cessful culmination of a campaign to raise
funds for the Jewish National Fund, for the
purchase of laild in Palestine for a colon to
be called Cuba. Judge Morris ' Rothenbe ,
president, and Mendel Fisher, executive direc-
tor, of the Jewish National Fund_ of America,
participated in thet campaign here.

PALESTINE
Preliminary reports by expefts disclose that
PaleStine has adequate water resources for the
irrigation of 4,000,000 dunams, excluding the
territory of the Negev, district, it was revealed
here by Dr. A. Granovsky, director of the
Jewish National Fund, who said that it would
be possible to create 180,000 intensive farming
units on these four million dunams. Experts
have also prepared a largef scheme, he said,
for irrigating the Negev with the waters of
northern Palestine.
A 17-year-old Arab villager and a number
of Greek servicemen, including a sergeant,
were sentenced to prison terms ranging up
to three years for arms running.
- Paul A. Smith, Negro tenor, will direct and
sing -the major role in Verdi's opera, "Othello,"
which he will shortly produce in Tel Aviv.
The opera "Carmen" was produced at the
Opera Mugrabi in Tel Aviv, under the direction
of George Singer.
OVERSEAS
The Hungarian government will• move all
Jews into homes contiguous to defense factories
and other military objectives under Allied
aerial attack, according to reports in London
quoting the newspaper Magyarsag, mouthpiece
of the Hungarian government. The newspaper
boasts that this would make the Jews most
vulnerable to the air attacks "unleashed in
their defense by. the Allies."
The Naziphile' newspaper Landbote,• publish-
ed in Berne, carried an attack on the Jews of
Switzerland, accusing them of bringing about
tension in the relations between Switzerland
and Germany. The attack described refugees
residing here as "the worst irritant."
The Romanian press is waging a relentless
anti-Jewish campaign, alleging that the Jews
are committing atrocities "against ChriStians"
in Bessarabia and Bucovina, now under Soviet
rule.

London, two Jewish refugees from Germany,
have discovered a new drug with great cure-
potentials. The press carried long stories on
the doctors, who- insisted that specific mention
be made that they are Jews.

Was awarded high Soviet decorations for ac-
tions against a German panzer unit on the
southwestern front. Lt. Einie Goldman is now
the recipient of four decorations. His sister,
Liuba2 Goldman, was decorated for her heroism
during the- defense of Leningrad, and was cited
for heading the best team engaged in the re-
construction of Stalingrad. ,

Polish Jews. in Canada Pratest Sentencing of Soldiers
MONTREAL, (JTA)—The Federation of Polish Jews in Canada
this week cabled to the Polish Government in London protesting the
sentences imposed by a Polish court-martial on Jewish soldiers.
"Our organization feels that condemning these soldiers who
were acting in good faith showing their willing/fess to sacrifice
their lives for the common holy cause of fighting Nazism with all
,its' doctrines is a miscarriage of 'common justice," the cable - said.

Dominions Urging Aid in Establishment of Palestine

JERUSALEM, (JTA)—Prime Ministers of the British Domin-
ions, now meeting in London, were asked in a cabled appeal from
here "to assist in the establishment of Palestine as a Jewish State
with the status of a dominion within the British Commonwealth."
The cable, sent by the New Zionist Organization, was dispatched
_following reports that the conference of the Prime Ministers is dis-
cussing the Palestine problem. It is understood that the Prime
Ministers of Conada, New Zealand and Australia favor continued
immigration of Jews to Palestine.
A "total war against the existing Jewish totalitarian regime in
.
Palestine" was proclaimed by the New Zionist Organization at a
press conference addressed by Dr. N. Altman, leader of the organ-
ization. Dr. Altman revealed that his group is "seriously consider-
ing" a proposal to break with the "Knesseth Israel," the organized
'Jewish community of Palestine, and all its institutions, and to es-
tablish its own National Council in place of the Vaad Leumi.
JNC Proclaims "Aaronshon. Month" to Honor Hero
" The Jewish National Council of Palestine this week proclaimed
gthe month of May as a "Aaronshon Month" in commemoration of the
f25th . anniversary of the death of Aaron Aaronshon, agronomist and
political leader, who 'in the last world war organized a Jewish in:-
-telligence service in Palestine • which helped England to defeat the
Central Powers in the Middle East.

Aaronshon died in May .1919 in a plane crash over the English
`Channel. He agreed to do intelligence work for the British on the
pondition that Palestine be given to the Jews after the war. His
, sister, Sarah, succeeded in securing important documents from Ger-
:man and Turkish officers which she delivered in 1917 to British
military headquarters. She later was arrested by the Turks and
, tortured fokseveral days until she committed suicide.

Jewish Agency Leader Returns from Liberated Italy
CAIRO, (JTA)—Palestine Jewish military units in Italy have
'Won high praise from British authorities for effective performance
of all tasks assigned them, it was reported here by Moshe Shertok,
Chief of the political department of the Jewish Agency, who has
•just completed an 11-day tour of the Allied-held sections of the
country.
Discussing the position of the Jewish refugees in Italy, Shertok
disclosed that about one-third of the several thousand -refugees in
the liberated areas are still living, in camps. The remainder are

The Agency political head said it was gratifying to see the
Palestine Jewish soldiers, who are easily distinguishable by the dis-
tinctive insignia they wear. They have established close contact
