WRB, Intergovernmental
Leaders Hold Conference

Bar Mitzvahs

Pehle, Emerson, Malin Dsicuss Plans to Intensify Task of
Rescuing Jews From. Europe; U. S. Names Refugee
Representative in Stockholm

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The work of rescuing Jews
from occupied Europe will be intensified as a result of a con-
ference here this week between Sir Herbert Emerson, director
of the Intergovernmental Committee on Refugees, and John
W. Pehle, director of the War Refugee Board. Patrick Malin,
American vice-director of the Intergovernmental Committee,

also was present.
Sir Herbert, who recently ar-
rived in this country from Lon-
don, disclosed that he will meet
with Myron C. Taylor, the
"father" of the Evian Confer-
ence who is vice-president of
the Intergovernmental Commit-
tee and a member of President
Roosevelt's Advisory Committee
on Refugees. Sir Herbert also
will meet with the members of
the WRB relief organizations
which, he said, are doing inval-
uable work in the field of refu-
gee assistance.
Meanwhile, it was announced
here by Mr. - Pehle that the WRB
has appointed a special repre-
sentative for Sweden. The ap-
pointee, Iver C. Olsen, has been
assigned to the U. S. Legation
in Stockholm as a .special at-
-
tache on war refugee matters.
Refugees Reach Instanbul
The Board also reported. that
Ira Hirchmann, its representa-
tive in Turkey, has already left
Ankara en route to Washington
for consultations on matters con-
cerning the rescue of Jews from
Nazi satellite countries. (The
Turkish ship "Maritza" carrying
260 Jewish refugees from Ro-
mania without any visas reach-
ed Instanbul recently. The refu-
gees were permitted to land and
left this week by train for
Aleppo en route to Palestine.)
In a speech before the
Women's National Press Club,
Pehle disclosed that the recent
return of 40,000 Jewish deportees
from Transnistria was directly
the result of pressure exerted on
Romania by the War Refugee
Board. Pehle said the Board is
working through neutral chan-
nels to prevent satellites from
deporting Jews to Poland and
is bringing pressure to assist
persecuted peoples' escape.
Satellites Warned
He revealed that satellites have
been advised in their own inter-
ests to take advantage of such
opportunities as may be available
to them in the -future to permit
refugees to depart across their
borders into territories of any
neutral countries which may be
prepared to receive them.
Pehle again stressed the im-
portance of Spain as one of the
last outlets remaining in Europe.
In view of the military develop-
ments in the Balkans, he said,
.111. Spain may be the sole remain-
ing refuge.

500 Jewish Refugees
Accepted by Turkey
NEW„ YORK (JPS)—Through
arrangements made by Laurence
Steinhardt, American ambassa-
dor at Ankara, 500 Jewish refu-
gees have been admitted to
Turkey, according to dispatch
by Joseph M. Levy to the New
York Times. They arrived with-
out visas.
This bears witness, to the ef-
ficacy of the War Refugee Board
the correspondent says, but "all
those here (in Turkey) interest-
ed in the humanitarian work .. .
deplore that the establishment
of this Board was not thought
of years, or even six months
earlier, when the chances were
far greater than today to save
large numbers of refugees."

Gailani, Quisling of
Iraq, Is Apprehended

LONDON (JPS)—The former
Premier Rashid Ali el Gailani of

against the British in the spring
of 1941 and later fled to Ger-
many, has been brought back to

his colleagues, according to a
Reuters dispatch from that city.
He was at one time an associate
of the Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj
Amin el Husseini, now in Berlin.

favoring the creation of a
Jewish National State, how-
ever small," it is predicted
in an article in the London
