Reform Jews Oppose White
Paper, Ask Hate Mail Ban
Rabbi Cisendrath Calls Upon Synagogues and Rabbis Affil-
iated with Union of American Hebrew Congregations
to Urge Congress to Act on Two Issues
CINCINNATI, O.—Presidents of 308 congregations comprising
the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, as well' as the 254
rabbis associated with the U.A.H.C., were called upon by. Rabbi
Maurice N. Eisendrath, new director of the liberal Jewish body, to
express opposition to the British White Paper and to urge Con-
gress to enact legislation designed to - ban from the mails material
apt to fan racial or religious hatred.
The U.A.H.C. director enclosed with his letter copies of House
Resolution 2328 and Joint Resolution 49. The former, referred to
the Committee on the Post Office and Post Roads, proposes to add
Sec. 335a to Title 18 of the Criminal Code so that "all papers,
pamphlets, magazines, periodicals, books, pictures and writings
of any kind, containing any defamatory and false statements which
tend to expose persons designated, identified or characterized there-
in by race or religion . . . to hatred, contempt, ridicule, or obliquy
are hereby declared non-mailable matter and shall not be con-
veyed in the mails or delivered from any post office or by any
letter carrier." This proposal provides a penalty of imprisonment
for five years, or a fine of $5,000, or both fine and imprisonment.
Joint Resolution 49, referred to the same committee, seeks to
supplement Section 211 of the Criminal Code and thus to declare
non-mailable "all papers, pamphlets, magazines, periodicals, books,
pictures and writings . . . designed or adapted or intended to cause
racial or religious hatred or bigotry or intolerance."
Reports Confirm Murder of Kiev Jews
Reports received this week from Kiev authorities corroborate
cables that have been published in The Jewish News that 50,000
to 80,000 Jews in Kiev have been murdered by the Nazis in the
last two years.
The Kiev Atrocity Commission has informed American,
British and Russian newspaper correspondents that the massacre
occurred two years ago in a ravine near Kiev. When the Nazis
recently retreated, they exhumed these bodies and burned them to
destroy the evidence.

Despite the protests of Jewish leaders
and labor organizations, Patrolman James
L. Drew, who has been up on charges in
the Police Department because of the
possession of thousands of pamphlets,
stickers and books of an alleged anti-
Semitic nature, and on whom a verdict
has still not yet been returned, is still on
his beat in Brownsville, a large Jewish
section of Brooklyn, it was reported by
Victor Riesel in the New York Post.
The United states must "do its share
in providing asylum _ for Jews escaping
from the Nazis, Mayor Fiorello H. La-
Guardia of New York said, speaking be-
fore the House Foreign Affairs Committee
holding hearings on the Rogers-Baldwin
Resolution which urges President Roose-
velt to create a commission to save the
Jewish people of Europe from extinction.
A special prayer from Rabbi Isaac Her-
zog, Chief Rabbi of Palestine, addressed
. to Senator Edward Johnson of Colorado,
was received at the Emergency Committee
to Rescue the Jewish People of Europe. It
urges the senator and his "colleagues in
the United States to a supreme effort to
rescue the remnant of Israel given over
to cruel torment and death in the clutches
of the Nazi fiends in human guise."
Herman Ullstein, ousted by Hitler from
control of the giant publishing house, Ull-
stein Verlag, died here at the age of sixty-
eight. He was one of • five brothers who
controlled the largest chain of newspapers
and magazines in Germany. Although op-
posed to Nazism, they tried to co-operate
with Hitler at first but were ousted in an
anti-Semitic drive in 1934 even though
they had been converted from Judaism.
The scheduled broadcast 4 of Ex-King
Carol of Rumania from Mexico City, was
cancelled on orders of the Office of Cen-
sorship. King Carol installed Rumania's
first Fascist regime and was responsible
for Rumania's "Nuremburg Laws" bati-
ning Jews from public office.
Charges by Gedalia Bublick, leader of
the Mizrachi, Zionist Orthodox organiza-
tion, that the American Jewish Committee
had in its possession a "war plan" against
Orthodoxy and Zionism in the United
States, were denounced as "no truer than
the Protocols of Zion" in a statement by
Dr. John Slawson, executive director of
the American Jewish Committee.
PALESTINE
An Arab villager of the Gaza district
was sentenced by military tribunal in
Jerusalem to two years' imprisonment for
the illegal possession of a German Mauser
pistol which he had bought from a British
soldier for three pounds. (About $12.)
The Palestine government on Nov. 30
lifted completely the ban imposed on nine
Hebrew dailies and one German-language
daily for their reports on the Ramat Hako-
vesh incidents. The papers, rejecting an
earlier government plan to permit them
to reappear according to a stagger system,
had declared their intention to appear
simultaneously on the day the last ban is
lifted.
