The Prayer for 5704

A Happy New Year!
This phrase is today more than a wish.
It is a prayer,
It is a prayer uttered in the hope that Jews and Chris-
tians may soon be spared the agonies which have been
brought about by a world catastrophe which has struck all
.peoples in every part of the globe.'

*

*

For the Jewish people, the world catastrophe has been
more tragic than for any other nation in 'the world. The
tragedies of Poland and China are minimal compared with
the sufferings of Israel.
Other peoples have been deprived of their freedoms; they
have been reduced to slavery. But in the coming Victory
.these rights will be restored to them, and : they have a chance
for the reconstruction of their national lives.
Against the Jews, the Axis gangsters conducted, a war of
annihilation. They vowed that they would exterminate our
people, and in large measure they have already succeeded.
Four million Jews have already fallen victims to Nazism, and
as many more of our kinsmen are threatened- with extermi-
natinn.
Because our plight is so much more serious, our obliga-
tions as Jews are also far greater.

The year 5704 opens with challenges to our people of a
far more serious nature than any that have faced us in the
past.
During this year we must solidify our forces in defense
of our position everywhere after the war.
We must mobilize all our resources so that we may be
prepared for the gigantic job of rescuing the millions who
may yet be saved from the Nazi hordes.
We must prepare the ground for colonization efforts—
especially in Palestine.

Fortunately, we are better prepared now than we have
been in the last 2J years to assume the tasks ahead of us.
A_ central agency has been formed, through the mobiliza-
tion cf Jewish communities in the American Jewish Confer-
ence, to speak and act for American Jewry on issues involv-
ing tne security and the future of our people.
Tne recognized relief and reconstruction movements are
prepared to handle important and serious situations af-
fecting our people.
The Yishuv in Palestine is determined to carry on in the
face of many obstacles and the pioneers in the Jewish Na-
tional Hor_e are determined to fight to a finish that Eretz
Israel be recognized as the Jewish Commonwealth where no
restrictions shall be placed upon the' settlement of large nuth-
bers of JeWS.
*
*
As we face the new year, we should pause to pay homage
to the heroes on all battlefronts who are fighting valiantly in
order that humanity's hopes for freedom may be fulfilled.
We pause to pay honor to the men and women in the uni-'
forms of the United Nations—including the American armed
forces and the Palestinian units; and to the heroic groups
who, as in the instance of the defenders of the Warsaw
Ghel to against the Nazis, are joining guerilla forces to com-
bat Nazism in the lands under Nazi rule.

The prayers of our people for 5704 call for complete and
speedy Victory over the brutal Axis forces by the United .
Nations.
We pray that the hearts of the statesmen in democratic
lands may be opened so that speedy relief may be found for
millions of Jews who may otherwise be subjected to tragic
death at the hands of the tyrants who now control most of
Europe.
We ask that nothing shall. be done to interfere with the
progress achieved by our people in Palestine and that the.
pledges for the establishment of a Jewish Commonwealth in'
Eretz Israel by fully honored.
We hope that.the destructive groups which were respon-
sible for the injection of racial and religious bigotries in this
country will be defeated by force of public opinion which,
will not tolerate prejudices in this great land.
We pray that the year 5704 should 'be the beginning of a.,
long- era of peace and joy and security for all mankind.
In this spirit we extend wished for' a Happy New Year;
to the entire community of Israel.

A Stupid Anti-Jewish Campaign

It sounds incredible that anti-Semitic sentiments should
be heard in this great land during a war in which all ele-
ments are engaged to destroy bigotry and fanaticism. Never-
thele::s, the approaching Primary Election for Mayor of De-
troit has brought forth a candidate who labors under the im-
pression that in the 20th century, in free America, voters who
are imbued with the spirit of WashingtOn, Lincoln and Jef-
ferson will listen to a call of prejudice..
A man by the name Edward A. Carey, an employe of the
City of Detroit for the past 19 years, makes an appeal for
votes based on hatred. But he has not limited himself to
bigotry. His campaign statement is steeped in ignorance
and is replete with misrepresentations.

Talmudic Tales

By DAVID MORANTZ

(Based upon the ancient legends and
philosophy found in the Talmud and
folklore of the Jewish people.) •

REGARD THY MANNERS

To test out the manners of two
of his pupils, Rabbi.. Akiba invi-
ted them to dine with him. He
had ordered two dishes of meat
prepared, one well-cooked and
the other only half done. The lat-
ter was served first. The more
sensible pupil tried to eat the
meat, but finding it very tough,
he moved it aside quietly and
ate the rest of the food without
saying a Word.
The other one' struggled with
the' meat and raised quite a corn-
motion at the table, trying to
eat it, complaining all the while
about the toughness of it.
Then the Rabbi ordered the
well-roasted meat brought in and
said: "My children, I did that
to test thy manners. May this
meat be more satisfying to you."

We are confident that the community will know how to
deal with such a candidate. Unfortunately, in a democracy
there is no way of saying to such a person that he can not
resort to pamphleteering, even if it incites to hatred.
Possibly, however, resnonsible men in our city govern-
ment will investigate the background of such a person in or-
der to ascertain why a man who is motivated by deep-rooted
hatred should be permitted to serve a community of Jews as
well as Christians.
This man Carey not only blames "high prices charged by
Jewish merchants" as being responsible for the 'recent De-
troit race riots; he opens his circular with the statement that
"we are fighting a war in which the Jewish bankers are
greatly interested"; he raises'. the senseless bogey of a
"20% Jewish snatch act" in an effort' to condemn Secretary
Says the Talmud further on
of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau as being a tool of "Jew
bankers in control. of our money"; he invokes "the Jewish the subject of manners:
Talmud" with all the ignorance at the command of a person
"When two are sitting at the
of the caliber exposed by the type of tripe we have just table, the elder one commences
to eat first and the younger one
quoted.

Yes, we place faith in our voters that they will know
how to deal with such un-American anti-Semitism. But we
also sincerely hope that the responsible leaders in our com-
munity, including other candidates for Mayor and the met.L
ropolitan press, will so severely castigate such contemptible
propaganda that no one of Mr. Carey's ilk ever again will
dare to print such stupid lies as he resorts to in his political
leaflet.

"One shall not rejoice among
