Judah Pilch's Book Is a Fine

"To help the average Ameri-
can Jew orient himself to the
Jewish group of which he is a
part," Judah Pilch has written
an exceedingly interesting book,
"Jewish Life In Our Times,"
which Berman's Jewish Book
House, 1261 Broadway, New
York, published last month.
In his anxiety to do a perfect
job, the author points out in the
preface that after the war the
sections dealing with Jewish life
in Europe, Asia and Africa will
require revision.
As it stands, the book ably out-
lines the subject it deals with.
The scope of our religious life,
the Jewish language problems,
the evolutionary Of Jewish liter-
ary creations, including the sta-
tus of the Jewish press, art and
education, are covered well by

News of importance in Jewish
literary ranks, and especially to
Zionists, is the appearance of
the second English edition of
Moses Hess' famous book, "Rome
and Jerusalem," from the press
of the Bloch Publishing Co., New
York.
Originally published in Ger-
many 80 years ago and trans-
lated into English 25 years ago
by Prof. Meyer Waxman of New
York, the new edition contains
a new preface by the original
translator. The book aslo con-
tains a biography of the eminent
German-Jewish Socialist who
mras an outstanding forerunner
of Theodor Herzl in sponsoring
the Zionist ideal.
"Rome and Jerusalem" occupies
an important place on the Jewish
bookshelf as a classic dealing
with Jewish nationalism. Hess
foresaw the solution to the Jew-
ish problem in the establishment
of a Jewish state in Palestine;
and his book, which reappears
after being out of print 18 years,
analyzes the Jewish issues in all
their ramifications.
In his preface to the new vol-

Jews," will be found of great
value to the average reader, to

ly with an evaluation of modern
Jewish community organization
as a development from the tradi-
tional Kehillah.
Practically every Jewish or-
ganization of importance, in this
country and in Europe, is ex-
plained and evaluated. Included
in the study are the community
organizations like American
. Jewish Committee, American
Congress, Bnai Brith, Alliance
Israelite Universelle; as well as
agencies serving relief and re-
habilitation causes—J. D. C:, Ha-
dassah, HIAS, ICA, ORT, OZE,
etc.

Unknown Terms

For many readers, some of the
explanations of the aims and
purposes of these movements will
be veritable revelations. OZE
and TOZ may be unknown terms
to the average readers; but after
reading this book they will feel
that they have been fully en-
lightened.

Best Wishes for
A Happy and
Victorious
New Year

There is a 32-page chapter on
Zionism and Palestine which
concludes with emphasis on the
Zionists' affirmation of faith in
the ultimate realization of Jew-
ish aspirations in Eretz Israel.
"Jewish Life In Our Times"
contains two fine summaries of
both sections of the book, many
explanatory footnotes, a bibliog-
raphy and an index.

ume, Prof. Waxman states in
part:

"Hess views Judaism not merely
as a religion but as one of the two
forces which moulded human culture
throughout the ages . . . He dreamt
that Israel when settled on his land
was destined to carry out his historic
function on a greater scale . . . which
will enable the Jews. this historic
people, to develop their life in accord-
ance with the principles of the Jewish
spirit so that they may become a great
cultural force in the development of
humanity.

"It is interesting to note that Hess
did not forget to include the American
people in his idealistic philosophy of
history. In assigning functions to great
nations he says: 'America represents
the general regenerating power by
means of which all elements of his-
torical peoples will be assimilated into
one'—a great task indeed and which
we hope will be carried out' success-
fully in the near future." I
