the . Sholar Sounds -
By FRANK L. WEIL
President, National Jewish Welfare Board
As the sound of the Shofar
heralds the coming of Rosh
Hashanah, we face the year 5704
with new hope and with re-
newed confidence in the future.
The tide of victory has definite-
ly turned our way and the heroic
exploits of our armed forces and
our great allies gives every in-
dication of ultimate triumph over
the totalitarian forces that, for a
time, threakened to engulf the
world.
Our immediate task remains
what it has been for the past
two years, to bend our every
effort to the winning of the -war.
As the. representatives of -the
American JeWish community the
Nationale Jewish Welfare Board
will continue to provide for the
religious.; cultural and reeled-,
tional needs of the Jewish men
and woMen in the service both
at horne. and- in the far-flung
battle fields -of the world.
":Plan for Peace
We will continue to act -in
terms of the present needs,' but
we muSt think and plan for the
days of 'Peace to come and the
experience of. the Jewish Wel-
fare Board in this war gives -
promise of a finer, a better and
a healthier Jewish community
after the war.
To serve our Jewish men and
women in uniform 37 National
Jewish organizations represent-
ing every section of Jewish
thinking in America are working
jointly :and in cooperation with
the Jewish Welfare Board. The
natural differences that exist be-
tween them are subordinated to
the common good; the ultimate
program presented to the com-
munity is a joint program in
which all concur.
.
causes that serve the welfare of
our people.
The record of our Jewish youth
in service in this war gives the
direct lie to those who said be-
fore the war that there was no
hope for Jewish youth. We have
been privileged through our
work to come in contact with
countless numbers of these serv-
icemen and women. We have
watcher them mature from the
uncertainty of the early days to
t h e confident champions of
liberty they are today. These
youthful fighters are God-fear-
ing men, participating in religi-
ous services and anxious for re-
ligious guidance. They will be
among the leaders who will build
the American future and who
will uphold the democratic tra-
ditions of ancient Judaism. It is
they who will help make it pos-
sible for us to look to the future
with a spirit of optimism and
challenge.
Meet Every Test
As individuals and as groups
this war has brought us into
closest cooperation and relation-
ship with our Christian neigh-
bors. We know now, more than
ever, how possible and good it
is for Jew and Jew to dwell in
unity and for Jew and Christian
to strive in unison for a common
cause. We know that the youth
upon whom our future depends
can meet every test put to them.
We look forward in the New
Year which lies before us with
increased hope to a more vital
and intelligent Judaism, that will
contribute in even greater
measure to the welfare of the
country of which we are, so
proudly, a part.

A ROSH HASHANAH MESSAGE
from
CONGRESSMAN
GEORGE G. SADOWSKI
"On this holyday of Rosh Hashanah,' - We cannot forget
the ideal for which our forefathers have struggled and
made sacrifices, even of their lives. No! We cannot.
forget that ideal if. We are truly Ameridan, fpr. today
our present generation are giving their lives for the
same cause. Democracy shall live so long as we believe
in the dignity and divinity of every 'man and so long
as we labor, in free and spontaneous co-operation to
make its blessings available to all."
racial Dries. ..
Anyone who has given any thought at all to the prin-
ciples upon which our nation is founded cannot but
be conscious of the spiritual liberty and fairness to all
which they were intended to maintain.
I am very glad to present my greetings to the Jewish
people of Michigan in the hope that it may bring every
citizen peace, happiness and prosperity during the
coming year.
