5 Senators
To Support

Rescue Plan

Pledged to Back Emergency
Conference Proposal
In Congress

WASHINGTON, (JTA)—Five
Senators this week issued a joint
statement declaring the rescue of
the Jews from Nazi Europe to be
"urgent and timely" and pledg-
ing their active support in Con-
gress to any plan which may
evolve from the Emergency Con-
ference to Save the Jews of Eu-
rope, held this week in New
York.
The statement, signed by Sen-
ators Edwin C. Johnson, (D), of
Colorado; Warren Barbour, (R),
of New Jersey; James J. Davis,
(R), of Pennsylvania; William
Langer, (R), of North Dakota;
and James E. Murray, (D), of
Montana, reads:
"Moved by the plight of the
helpless Jews of Europe, who
are facing a purposeful annihila-
tion, we wish to welcome the
Emergency Conference to Save
the Jews of Europe, and we
eagerly await any proposed plan
for action which may result from
this meeting.
"We are convinced that the
rescue of as many as possible of
the four million remaining Jews
in Germany and the occupied
countries is both urgent and
timely. It is a terrible problem
which has been too long evaded
or at least overlooked.
"We dare not wait any longer
to move these helpless objects of
Nazi wrath to places of safety,
for every day of postponement
means death to thousands of in-
nocent victims. As the defeat of
the Axis grows imminent the
tempo of extermination will be
stepped up.

ENV YORK, (JTA)—Predict-

ing that the United Nations Re-
lief and Rehabir tation Agency
probably will have to assume re-
sponsibility for every phase of
the existence of all Jewish in
Europe "with the exception of
one or two countries," the World
Jewish Congress this week ad-
dressed an appeal to the United
Nations asking them to include
Jewish representatives in the re-
lief machinery.
"In view of the enormous
tasks of relief in the places
where Jews are concentrated, it
is providential that the occupy-
ing forces are likely to find ca-
pable local assistance in Europe
and qualified representatiyes of
the European Jews • abroad. It
must be part of the Allied plan
to prepare for their utilization
now," the appeal says.

MOSCOW — Caution and discretion should be
exercised in carrying on anti-religious propaganda
in the trade unions, it is emphasized in a circular
letter sent to all trade union organizations by the
All-Russian Trade Union Congress. The unions
must struggle against religious superstition as an
obstacle to spiritual freedom of the proletariat, but
"this struggle must find expression in methods of
persuasion and steady cultural work," the letter
says.
DETROIT—A charge that English Jews have
monopolized the wealth and natural resources of
Mexico and, therefore, the United States should
recognize that country in order to save it from the
clutches of the "grasping Jews," is the latest anti-
Semitic slander being spread by Henry Ford.
KOVNO—The appointment of Dr. S. Rosenbaum
as Minister for Jewish Affairs is a source of gratifi-
cation to Lithuanian Jewry as there were rumors
that the government had decided to abolish the
Ministry for Jewish Affairs and establish a general
Ministry of Minorities under a German minister.
NEW YORK—Pubilistic ability is an antidote for
anti-Semitism according to Arthur Brisbane, com-
mentating in the New York American on the
Leonard-Tendler fight. Brisbane says that Bennie
Leonard's ability to beat any Christian fighter has
done more to foster respect for the Jews than any
galaxy of brilliant Jewish authors.
JERUSALEM—Two representatives of the His-
tadruth, the Palestine Federation of Labor, have
been named to represent the organization at an
international exposition of agricultural products
opening in Moscow on August 15. The two dele-
gates are David Ben-Gurion and P. Rothberg.

HOLLYWOOD—Death of Con-
rad Veidt left a noticeable void
in the ranks of superb character
actors. He reached fame, as did
many others, through the wings
of Max Reinhardt's theater. Born
of Jewish parents, he left Ger-
many at Adolf's advent. He first
went to Austria . . . then to Eng-
land where he became a British
subject. He played in numerous
English pictures, among them,
"The Wandering Jew" and "Jew
Suss." He came to the U. S. in

1936 to appear with John Barry-
more. Acted in several Holly-
wood films, his last being "Casa-
blanca."

Charlie Adler, one of the har-
monizin' Yacht Club Boys, writes
from Bengazi, Africa . . . and
sounds a bit nostalgic for Holly-
wood.

Phil Berle, brother of Milton,
is a member of the Coast Guard.

The stork may even now be
flapping over the chimney at the
John Garfields' house.

Wagner and Offenbach: Why
Wagner Became an Anti-Semite.

One of the reasons which led
Wagner to attack the Jews was
because he was offended by a

fellow musician, Offenbach, who
was a Jew. He sent Offenbach
a copy of his score of the opera
"Rienzi," and asked him what
he thought of it. Offenbach sent
it back with a note: "Dear
Wagner: Your music is trash;
stick to poetry." Wagner was
deeply mortified, and wrote a
brochure attacking the Jews,
and a copy went off to Offen-
bach. After two days, Wagner
received the pamphlet back with
another note from Offenbach:
"Dear Wagner: Your brochure is
rot; stick to music."
