A grandfather at the age of 40
and a Second Lieutenant in the

ited to Lt. Carl C. Carlie now
stationed at Selfride Field.
Lt. Carlie hails from St. Louis,
Mo., where, in civilian life, he

for the Metropolitan Life Insur-
ance Company. His daughter,
Marian E. Rosenberg, mother of

sides in New York City. Mrs.
Carlie is with her husband.
On Aug. 21, 1942, Lt. Carlie en-
listed at Jefferson Barracks, Mo.,
and was sent to the Replacement
Training Center at Camp Lee,
Va., where he took his basic
training. In December he was
promoted to Staff Sergeant and
in - February was sent to Officers'
Candidate School at Camp Lee.
He received his commission on

day; we will celebrate one of the
most important holidays • on our
calendar.
Shovuoth is a great occasion.
It is the festival of the Giving of
the Law. It is the period of the
year when our boys and girls are
graduated from religious and
Hebrew schools. It is the time
for Consecrations and Confirma-
tions.
It is also one of the Jewish har-
vest festivals, dating back to our
history in Palestine when the
grains matured in the sub-tropical
climate of the Holy Land.
An interesting story is told
about the Rabbi of Kozk. He was
asked why Shovuoth is called
the Festival of the Giving of the
Torah and not the Time of Re-
ceiving the Torah. He replied:
"Because only on Shovuoth was
the Torah given; whereas the
receiving is still going on. All
have been given an equal share in
the Torah, but not everyone has
taken it."
This is an interesting comment,
because so many people through-
out the world still abuse the basic
laws handed down on Sinai.
I wish to congratulate all He-
brew and religious school gradu-
ates, all Confirmands and
Consecrants and to wish you all
a Happy Shovuoth.
UNCLE DANIEL.
