Temple Israel will hold two
special events in honor of
Mother's Day.
There will be a Mother's Day
service Friday night, May 14, at
8:30, in the Lecture Hall of the
Detroit Institute of Arts. Mothers
are asked to come with their
daughters to hear Rabbi Fram
preach on the subject, "Mother
I in Israel."
The second event will be the
Mother-Daughter luncheon on
Sunday, May 16, at 1 p. m., at
'the Jewish Community Center.
Cantor R. S. Tulman and Karl
Haas have arranged special music
for the Mother's Day service.
The social hour will be arrang-
ed in honor of mothers and
daughters.
Debate With Cleveland
The debating team of the high
school of the Temple of Cleve-
land will debate with Temple
Israel high school in the audi-
Jorium of Hampton school, 18460
Warrington Dr., this Sunday, at
11:30. The public is invited.
Temple Israel Religious School
will close its season on Saturday,
May 15, and Sunday, May 16.
The children of Temple Israel
Religious School are collecting
watches for the "Watches For
Russia" campaign.
Review of "One World"
This Friday night, Rabbi Fram
I reviews Wendell Willkie's book,
"One World."
The blackout Friday night will
not affect Temple Israel services
for the Lecture Hall of the In-
stitute of Arts is inside of the
building and is an air-raid shelter.
The service will continue without
tinterruption.

Rabbi Meyer Berlin, world re-
nowned leader of orthodox Jew-
ry, who recently flew to the
United States by bomber from
Palestine, will address a public
meeting at the Jewish Communi-
ty Center, Woodward at Hol-
brook, next Tuesday at 8:15 p. m.
Rabbi Berlin, president of the
World Mizrachi Organization,
came to the United States to en-
list the aid of our government in
behalf of a Jewish Palestine and
to obtain private aid for refugee
children.
All local Zionist groups will be
represented at the Jewish Com-
munity Center to join in honor-
ing this eminent world Zionist
leader. Rabbi Berlin has been
closely affiliated with the Zion-
ist movement for the past forty
years and is intimately acquaint-
ed with the political situation
in Palestine. As newspaper pub-
lisher, author and lecturer, he
has traveled the world over and
talked to the leaders of the prin-
cipal nations of the world regard-
ing Jewish problems.
The following local rabbis have
been appointed as honorary re-
ception committee for the visit of
Rabbi Berlin: Rabbis Isaac Stoll-
man, Max J. Wohlgelernter, Ja-
cob Ungar, Moses Fischer, Jacob
Nathan, Joshua Sperka, Jacob
Hoberman, Abraham Danzig, Jo-
seph Thumin and Morris Adler.

Meets Here

Dr. Nirenstein To Address
Parley At Beth Yehudah
On Sunday, May 16

The Michigan Synagogue Con-
ference will hold its annual
spring convention and election of
officers at Yeshivath Beth Ye-
hudah on Sunday, May 16.
The convention will discuss
steps for unity in orthOdox ranks
for the forthcoming National
Jewish Conference.
Dr. Samuel Nirenstein, presi-
dent of the Union of Orthodox
Congregations, will be guest
speaker at the spring convention.
Dr. Nirenstein who heads the
department of "Research and
Opinion of the Alien Property
Custodian Division," a govern-
ment agency under President
Roosevelt, was born in 1899 in
Hartford, Conn. His parents came
from Suwalke where his father
established a bank which was
closed on Saturdays. Dr. Niren-
stein received his education at
Trinity College of Connecticut,
the University of Pennsylvania,
and Dropsie College where he ob-
tained his Ph. D.
During his studies at Columbia
University Law School, he was
the chief editor of the Columbia
Law Review, in cooperation with
t w o present Supreme Court
Judges.
Dr. Nirenstein gained fame
during the Kashruth trial of the
markets against the Kashruth as-
sociation when he wrote foot-
notes to the decision of that
famous case as the law-secretary
of the Senior Judge of New York
McCook.

The annual Mother-Daugh-
ter service at Temple Beth El
will be held this Sabbath morn-
ing at 11 o'clock. This service,
which commemorates Mothers'
Day, will have as its participants
Mrs. Henry Meyers, President of
the Sisterhood, and three pupils
of the Religious School: Johanna
Frankel, Mary Judith Kallet
and Rhoda Beth Smilay.
Dr. B. Benedict Glazer will
extend the greetings of the Con-
gregation to the mothers and
daughters.
Special music has been ar-
ranged, with Margit Kormendy,
contralto of the Temple Quartet,
rendering Dvorak's "Songs My
Mother Taught Me."
Concluding Friday Service
This Friday evening will mark
the conclusion of the regular
Sabbath eve services. Dr. Gla-
zer will speak on "Fear, Anxiety
and Depression—How Can We
Successfully Face These Perils
to Normal Living?"
The musical portion of the
services is under the direction
of Julius Chajes, in charge of
the music department, and Jason
Tickton, organist. Immediately
following the services there will
be a Social Hour under the aus-
pices of the Sisterhood.

Dr. Caplan to Address
Young People's Groups

Young People's Society of Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek in con-
junction with the Young People's
Society of Bnai Moshe will have
a joint program this Sunday at
7:30 p. m., at the Shaarey Zedek.
Dr. B. Bernard Caplan, psy-
chiatrist, the guest speaker, will
have an informal discussion after
his lecture on emotional and psy-
chological problems affecting our
social lives today.
All interested are invited to at-
tend.

community of Detroit to cooperate

Michigan Synagogue Conference
and Congregation Shaarey Zedek
have joined in urging the fol-
lowing practice for synagogues
and individuals:
Congregations are asked to
start services not later than at
7 p. m., and to conclude them by
7:45 p. m. Sefirah is to be re-
cited at home.
Housewives are asked to kin-
dle the Sabbath lights at 7 p. m.,
using candles not longer than 3
inches which will burn for two
and three-quarter hours, unless
homes have completely blacked
out rooms, or unless homes have
provisions to have lights extin-
guished by non-Jews, completely
eliminating the use of electric
lights.

Beth Itzchock to Get
Plaque From Wagman

On Sunday, May 23, a plaque
with the names of sons of mem-
bers in the service will be pre-
sented to Congregation Beth Itz-
chock, 3836 Fischer Ave. The
plaque is the gift of Julius Wag-
man. Members and friends are
invited to attend the dedication.

preach on the subject "Through
the Family to Strength, Unity
and Progress."

The Sisterhood was host to
children of the Religious School
and their parents at a pre-Pass-
over Seder. Rabbi Sperka of-
ficiated.
For the remainder of the re-
ligious school the graduating
class has decided to meet an ad-
ditional two days a week under
the tutelage of Rabbi Sperka
and Max Chomsky, educational
director.

UNVEIL TOMBSTONE FOR
RABBI SP ALTER ON MAY 16

The family of the late Rabbi
Ralph Spalter announces that
the unveiling of a tombstone
over his grave will take place at
2 p. m. on Sunday, May 16, at
Machpelah Cemetery. Relatives
and friends are invited to attend.
