Old Newsboys' Fund Elects

Is Third Jew to Receive Honor; Urges Friends to See

Alex Schreiber, one of Detroit's champion Allied
Jewish Campaign Workers and president of the Fresh Air
Society, this week was given the distinct honor of being
•elected president of the Old Newsboys' Goodfellow Fund.
This is Mr. Schreiber's 15th year of service with the
Goodfellows. He is the third Jewish citizen of Detroit to

`His Father Israel'
Arthur Szyk's works were
placed on exhibit at the Jewish
Center Tuesday evening.
Szyk is the creator of an il-
lustrated Haggadah which is
known as the King's Haggadah.
Only 240 copies of this Haggadah
were printed: A copy sells for
$750. In addition to one of the
copies being displayed at the
Jewish - Community Center, 49
pages of original manuscripts
which Szyk prepared for the
Haggadah are also on exhibit.
The 46 pages of the original
manuscript of the Statute of
Kalisz are included in the dis-
play. This statute of Kalisz is the
Bill of Rights granted to the Jews
by Boleslasv, Grand Duke of Po-
land, in 1264. For this work
Szyk was awarded the 'Grand
Cross of Merit by the Polish gov-
ernment. Among the other items
included in the exhibit are 100
plaques which will be on sale at
$1 each, and 19 framed, signed
prints which will be on sale at
$4 each.
The Szyk exhibit is sponsored
by the art committee of the Cen-
ter of which Mesdames Walter
Laib and David B. Werbe are
co-chairmen. Other members of
the committee are Mesdames
Milton Strauss, Edward D. Quint,
Harold Smilay, Hoke Levin, Alex-
ander Freeman, Julian G. Wolf-
ner, Samuel R. Glogower, Joseph
M. Welt, Mortimer H. Meyers,
Melville S. Welt, Harry Farbsten,
Moritz Kahn, David Wilkus, and
Messers: Charles E. Feinberg and
Arthur Siegel.

lounge of the Center, is open to
the public without charge, Mon-
day through Thursday, 2 to 5 and
7:30 to 10 p. m., and Sunday, 2 to
5 p. m.

Veteran Theater Man
Mr. Schreiber was born in
Cleveland in 1900. He came to
Detroit in 1914 and has been in
the theatrical business since
1919. He is the first theatrical
man to be elected president of
the Old Newsboys.
Soon after coming to Detroit,
Mr. Schreiber became active in
Boy Scout Troop No. 23, and
was among the prominent mem-
bers of the Tri-Square and Wash-
ington Progressive Clubs. He be-
came prominent in Jewish affairs
through these early affiliations,
under the guidance of Fred M.
Butzel.
Has Many Interests
Recently Mr. Schreiber was re-
elected to the presidency of the
Fresh Air Society for his third

boards of the Jewish Welfare
Federation and the Detroit Ser-
