SYRACUSE (JPS)—Emphasiz-
ing that Zionism is not a philan-
thropic but a political:movement
which aims at the establishment
of a ."pOlitical state for the Jew-
ish nation. in Palestine", Dr: Ab-
ba Hillel Silver of Cleveland,
speaking at the opening session
of the annual convention of the
Poale Zion, urged American
Zionists to overthrow "vain pole-
mics and futile discussions and
concentrate on establishing a
Jewish Majority in Palestine."
The Zionist leaner ,demarided
that Pelestirle be placed under in-
ternational control to speed the
realization of a Jewish majority
or that a commonwealth be im-
mediately created based on the
possibility of a Jewish= majority.
Dr. Silver said that we. "cannot
permit a conspiracy of silence on
the Jewish postwar status."
Fighting As Allies
"We are fighting as - Allies in
Stalingrad, the Solomons and
Egypt, .and we demand restitution
and security individually and
nationally," he 'declared.
More than 1,000, delegates at-
tended the first session of the
Poale Zion Convention which
• was opened by' Ben Zion Miller
of this city. Hayim Greenberg,
who presided, stated that neither
pseudo-socialism 'nor socialism
can solve the Jewish problem,
but that Zionists and non-Zion-
ists, Jews and non-Jews must
unite to _establish a free Jewish-
Palestine Commonwealth.
"Anti-Semitism is poisoning
the countries which were previ-
ously not contaminated," the
Zionist leader said, adding the
warning that the problems Of the
United Nations will not be solved
and no durable peace will be
achieved without the establish-
ment in practice of Jewish equal-
ity."
Praises. Palestine Achievement
The crucial iinportance -at pres-
ent of the political aims of the
Zionist movement were also
stressed by Dr.' Nahum Gold-
mann.
Dr. Chaim Weizmarin, presi-
dent of the World Zoinist Organ-
ization and the Jewish Agency
'1942
for Palestine, lauded the achieve-
ments in Palestine which were
made'possible ttirough the closest
co-operation- with Labor Zionism.
David Wertheim, national sec-
retary, severely criticized the
American Jewish Congress for
conducting' its ' war effort in col-
laboration with the Communists.
He also deManded that action be
taken to combat. the establish-
ment of monopolistic Control of
the Keren Hayesod by the Gen-
eral Zionists.
Pdstwar Problems
An extraordinary Labor Zion-
ist convention will be held early
in the spring of 1943 to determine
the movement's stand and an ac-
tion of program on the position
of the• Jews in the postwar world;
to devise methods of immediate
relief to impoverished Jewry; and
to accelerate the rebuilding of
the Jewish homeland in Pales-
tine.
Dr. Leon Kubowitzki, former
head of the Belgian Poale Zion,
moved the entire audience with
his factual and document descrip-
tion of the cruelties being inflict-
ed on the Jews of Europe: He es-
timated that the civilian Jewish
dead number 'between 1,400,000
and 2,000,000.
Chaim Greenberg, Yiddish edi-
tor, foreseeing a massive post-
war migration, emphasized the
importance of Palestine. Some
advocates propose to settle 3,000,-
000 Jews in Palestine in 18
months, he said. He doubted the
practicality of Such a scheme but
considered it feasible to have a
10-year plan with a minimum of
100,000 Jews being settled an-
nually, provided the political and
financial conditions are 'favorable.
David Wertheim was re-elected
by the convention as national sec-
retary of the Central Committee
