LONDON (JPS)—Prime • Min-
the Balfour Declaration.
The Independent Jewish Press Service reports from ister General Jan Christian
Washington that the nationwide
celebration of the 25th annivers-
ary of the Balfour Declaration
brought a sympathetic message
from Secretary of State Cordell
Hull and a strong statement from
Wendell Willkie. The J.P.S. states
that this is the first comment by
Mr. Willkie on the Palestine sit-
uation since his return as Presi-
dential envoy to the Middle East.
Praise Achievements
Newspapers, c o m m e n tators,
radio columnists and distinguish-
ed public figures, Jews and
Christians alike, took advantage
of the anniversary celebration,
marked by appropriate meetings
in the major cities of the nation,
to praise what the Jews had ach-
ieved in Palestine and to reaf-
firm the necessity of securing
the Jewish National Home on
solid foundations after the war.'
Mr. Justice Felix Frankfurter is-
sued the first extended message
on Zionism since he ascended the
Supreme Court bench, to assert
that the experience of the past
25 years has "underscored the
wisdom underlying the Balfour
Declaration and the civilized
purposes at which it was aimed."
A unique suggestion in honor
of the ocasion was made at a
great demonstration in New York
City's Carnegie Hall when. Sena-
tor Elbert Thomas of Utah, in-
fluential member of the Foreign
Affairs Committee, urged that
the establishment of the Jewish
National Home be settled beyond-
question even before the end of
the war. He declared that the
satisfaction of the Jewish claim
to Palestine must be one of the
problems disposed of even before
the peace conference, because its
justice is so elementary. He
pointed to the abolition of extra-
territoriality in China as a pre-
cedent and parallel.

Nazi Police Admit
Murdering Jews
Direct Testimony Presented
in Articles Published by
"Jewish Frontier"
In a special November issue
entitled, "Jews Under the Axis",
the Jewish Frontier, leading Am-
erican Jewish monthly, presents
to the general public the first
well-documented and comprehen-
sive review of the horrible plight
of European Jewry in Hitler-
dominated lands.
Leading the series of well-doc-
umented articles and eye-witness
reports of Jewish suffering is an
incisive analysis of the Nazi
"Plan of Destruction" by Hayim
Greenberg, editor of the maga-
zine.
Direct testimony by German
police is • presented in a series of
extracts compiled by Marie Syr-
kin, associate editor.
According to conservative esti-
mates from reliable sources,
about 1,000,000 non-combatant
Jews have been liquidated by
starvation, disease and outright
murder.
Including only material that
has been received from thorough-
ly reliable sources, the story of
"Jews Under the Axis" is being
called to the attention of the
embassies of the United Nations,
to' the State Department and to
all members of the United States
Congress. The material has been
compiled with the cooperation of
the Institute of Jewish Affairs of
the American Jewish Congress.

ing jointly sponsored by the Am-
erican Emergency Committee for
Zionist Afairs and the American
Palestine Committee, headed by
Senator Wagner and McNary.
Weizmann Says Jewish State Was
Aim of Declaration
NEW YORK (JPS)—On the
occasion of the celebration of its
25th anniversary, Dr. Chaim
Weizmann, president of the
World Zionist Organization and
of the Jewish Agency for Pales-
tine, told the press that negotia-
tions for the issuance of the Bal-
four Declaration were based on
the principle of the establish-
ment of a Jewish State.
The noted Zionist leader, now
engaged in research in this
country in connection with the
Smuts of South Africa, one of
the leading spirits among United
Nations leaders, wants the Bal-
four Declaration "carried out to
the letter," he declared in a state-
ment issued for the celebration
of the 25th anniversary of the
issuance of the British pledge to
establish a Jewish National Home
in Palestine. General Smuts is
credited with a large part of the
drafting of the famous document.
No Real Peace Without
- Jewish Freedom
The vision of Jewish freedom
initiated by the Balfour Declara-
tion must reach complete ful-
fillment in the postwar era, for
the sake of the Jews and that of
the whole world, if the peace is
to be meaningful, it was assert-
ed in a series of addresses and
messages heard at a demonstra-
tion at the Palace Theater here.
Arthur Greenwood, Labor
Party leader, Mrs. Blanche Dug-
dale, niece of Lord Balfour, and
Sir Wyndham Deedes were
among the speakers at the meet-
ing, which also heard messages
from General Smuts, South Afri-
can Prime Minister, Leopold
Amery, Secretary of State for
India, Viscount Cecil, Sir Archi-
bald Sinclair and representatives
of other segments of British pub-
lic life. In all speeches and greet-
ings, the theme was that of con-
gratluations to the Jews of Pales-
tine for the transformation they
had wrought, despite all diffi-
culties in the upbuilding of the
ancient homeland in the years
that have passed since the Decla-
ration was issued.
Harold Laski Sees Palestine
As Ray of Hope
The message from Harold
Laski, eminent political scientist
and author, said: "No tragedy
such as that in modern times has
befallen our people. To me the
significance of Palestine is two-
fold: first, as a fortress for those
who found a refuge there, where
they have given proof of their
creative power in political and
economic work: secondly, the
very existence of the Jewish
homeland has lighted a ray of
hope in the hearts of millions of
our fellow-Jews who, in the oc-
cupied countries, would• face the
future without hope—and men
without hope have lost the clue
to the dignity which makes men.
"Even if the Declaration has
been whittled down by the
cowardice of governments, the
celebration is at least a reminder
to the United Nations of the Jew-
ish claim to a share in the destiny
of those claiming the right to
freedom and democracy."
The British press, with the ex-
ception of only the Manchaster
Guardian, was strangely silent
editorially regarding the great
meeting held in commemora-
tion of the 25th anniversary of
the Balfour Declaration. In its
editorial the Manchester Guard-
ian hailed the milestone of Jew-
ish achievement in Palestine dur-
ing the past quarter century.
The Reynolds News of London
observed the 25th anniversary of
the Balfour Declaration with a
special illustrated edition depict-
ing the Jewish war effort in
Palestine.
