Stating that "the Jewish people
is bleeding from a thousand
wounds and the whole house of
Israel is a hostelry of wounds,"
Rabbi Silver told of the tragedies
suffered at the hands of the man
of Berchtesgad"n who swore to
annihilate the Jews.
"He is afraid of the Jews," Dr.
Silver declared. "He is afraid,
not of our might, but of our spirit.
As long as the ideals of the
Judeo-Christian civilization sur-
vive he can not succeed."
Monday's reports showed that
the workers had exceeded the
$2,000,000 mark and were well on
the way to meeting the entire
goal of $5,800,000.
Small Gifts Increased
Among the interesting reports
submitted at the luncheon was
James I. Ellmann's account of the
work of the treasury gifts divi-
sion. He announced that 38 small
Jewish benevolent groups, whose
previous gifts amounted to $3,200,
are giving $10,045 to the War
Chest.
There were many humorous
interludes at Monday's meeting.
For instance, Mr. Butzel, in his
introductory remarks, jocularly
spoke of the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign as absorbing the War Chest.
Also, Mrs. John J. O'Brien was
assigned the task of reporting
for the team headed by Mrs.
Joseph H. Ehrlich and Mrs.
Henry Wineman, and the an-
nouncement drew a good laugh.
Rudolph Zuieback was intro-
duced as the "star solicitor" for
the team headed by the Seymour
Brothers—Herbert B. and Bar-
tholomew A.—and he gave an
excellent report of his commit-
tee's work.
