"My biography is brief—born in Grand Rapids, February,
1890, graduated Grand Rapids High School 1908, Colgate
University 1912, Harvard Law School 1915, practiced law at Grand
Rapids 1915 to January 1941, Special Assistant to the Secretary of
War, Washington, D. C.. January 1941 until the present time.
He added to this brief letter: "I have no photograph
available."
But the Grand Rapids Press has
a heavy file on Mr. Amberg whose
rich career is one of the most
enviable in the entire state: and
there is also a photograph of
this brilliant lawyer whose broad
experience has led to his being
called to the important job as as-
sistant Secretary of War Henry
L. Stimson. It is a record which
places him in the ranks of the
first half dozen outstanding Mich-
igan Jews.

of Grand Rapids.
Thirty years ago, when he was
graduated from Colgate, he was
already singled out for special
attention. He was editor-in-chief
of his college paper, the Madison-
costs, and the college annual, the
Salmagundi. He was graduated
with highest scholarship honors,
was captain of the intercolleg-
iate debating team, won essay and
oratorical contests. In addition,
he was honored with member-
ships in Phi Beta Kappa, Delta

fraternities.

At Harvard, he twice received
the Sears prize for scholarship

the Harvard Law Review, of
which Undersecretary of War

Harvard in 1915 has been in the
law firm of Butterfield, Keeney
and Amberg.
From 1935 to 1940, by appoint-
ment of the Michigan Supreme
Court, Mr. Amberg was commis-
sioner-at-large of the State Bar
of Michigan. He was president of
the State Bar Association in 1939
and 1940. In June 1940, he was
awarded an honorary J. D. De-

An item in his career which
must not be overlooked is the

Their persecution and oppres-
sion in recent years has exceeded
the worst in their long and sad
history. In time they will over-
come their present difficulties as
they have overcome their diffi-
culties in the past. We may rest
assured that they will continue
to make their noble contribu-
tions to the betterment of man-
kind.

When Mr. Amberg was called
to Washington to become assist-
ant to Secretary of War Stim-
son, the Grand Rapids Press
hailed his appointment editorially
and said in part:
"Julius Amberg never has
sought public office. But he is
one of that somewhat rare type
which very often is sought by the
office. He is one who would say
that public service is a privilege
