At sundown, Friday, Sept. 11,
"Rosh Hashanah," the Jewish
New Year 5703, will be ushered
in. To mark the observance of
this high Jewish holiday, the Na-
tional Broadcasting Co., in co-
operation with the Synagogue
Council of America, will present
a special broadcast Thursday,
Sept. 10, at 11:30 p.m. (EWT).
The broadcast will present holi-
day messages from two outstand-
ing rabbis. A direct pickup from
London will bring to America
the voice of the Chief Rabbi of
Great Britain, Rabbi Joseph H.
Hertz. Replying, as the represen-
tative of American Jewry, will
be the president of the Synagogue
Council of America, Rabbi Israel
Goldstein of New York.
Traditional liturgical music will
be sung by a choir under the di-
rection of Prof. A. W. Binder, of
the Jewish Institute of Religion,
New York.

Devoted to Appeal for
Memorial Tribute

The Chief Rabbinate of Eretz
Israel, Rabbi Dr. Isaac Halevi
Herzog and Rabbi Ben-Zion Meir
Chai Uziel, have recently issued
-a-proclamation which calls upon
American Jewry • to remember
the great mitzvah of Geulath
Haaretz in the present critical
hour for Palestine and for the
entire Jewish people.
It has been a traditional cus-
tom in the synagogues of Amer-
ica to devote the first Selichoth
night (which this year is Sept.
5), to the Jewish National Fund.
The Rabbinate th r o ugh o u t
America have decided that this
year the first Selichoth night
should be devoted to appeals for
the planting of trees in the Re-
vel Forest dedicated to the me-
mory of that guiding genius of
the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theo-
logical Seminary and founder of
Yeshiva College, Rabbi Dr. Ber-
nard Revel. This new project of
the Jewish National Fund is un-
der the auspices of the Religi-
ous Groups Contact Department
of the Jewish National Fund.

brary by a group of public-spir-
ited Jewish citizens. The present-

Jews will not be inducted
into the service of the U. S.
during Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur, according to a
ruling handed down this week.
Upon intercession by Rabbi
Max J. Wohlgelernter, chair-
man of the religious and edu-
cational committee of the
Michigan Synagogue Confer-
ence, assurances were given
by the Selective Service Mich-
igan State Headquarters at
Lansing that this order will
be communicated to selective
draft committees throughout
the state.

Ber Gordon as its new Cantor.
He will begin his services with
Selichoth, Saturday, Sept. 5, at
midnight.
Cantor Gordon was *born in
Vilna, where he received his
early education. Later he studied
in musical conservatories of Eur-
opean capitals. Following his
position in the Broder Synago-
gue in Manchester, Eng., he of-
ficiated in Vilna and also in Tel
Aviv, Palestine.
Cantor Gordon will be assisted
by a large choir, directed by
David Shkolnick.
There will be no charge at the
Selichoth Services and Congre-
gation Bnai David extends an in-
vitation for all to attend these
