Capt. Shapero Off
To Quantico Base

Captain Albert Shapero, former
detective sergeant and crack shot
of the Detroit Police Department,
and one of the ablest marksmen
in the country, left late last
:week for service with the Marine
Corps at Quantico, Va. Capt.
Shapero signed a provisional res-
ignation from the department
when he received his commis-
sion, which allows him the priv-
ilege of returning to duty after
the war. He first joined the
Marines when he was only 17
years old.
At the railroad station a large
party of friends gathered to bid
him Godspeed. Mrs. Shapero was
there, with their two daughters,
Sharon Lee, 13, a student of
McKenzie High School, and Di-
anne, 10, who goes to Parker
School. The captain tried to make
light of his departure. He laughed
and joked and shook hand all
'round. As he bent to embrace
his younger daughter, she wasn't
smiling. His "front" hadn't fooled
her.
Her eyes filled with tears, she
blurted out a conviction that our
country's leaders have been try-
ing to burn into American minds
ever since Pearl Harbor. "'Tain't
funny, daddy, 'tain't!"
