Thousands of Jewish women in Palestine have registered to do their
share in the Yishuv's war effort. The Zionist Organization of America
is now engaged in mustering the support of American Jewry for the
establishment of Palestine as a permanent Homeland for millions of
uprooted and homeless Jews.

A
RIDDLE
Here is a riddle, the answer
to which is a very short word:
"If my first were last,
My hunger would be past;
If my last were first,
I should quench my thirst."
The answer is eat. If my first
were last, it would make ate,
and my hunger would be past.
If my last were first it would
make tea, and I should quench
my thirst.

CHILDREN'S
CORNER
Dear Boys and Girls:
Very often, the question is
asked, "What is a Jew?" And
sometimes many of us find it
necessary to answer the ques-
tion, "As Jews, what are our
obligations?"
The great American Jewish
leader, Dr. Stephen S. Wise,
once wrote a very interesting
article "Because I Am a Jew"
which answers many questions,
and I am printing it here for
the benefit of all of us. young
and old.
Dr. Wise, you should know, is
the president of a Jewish theo-
logical college—the Jewish In-
stitute of Religion of New York
—where students are trained to
become Rabbis. He is the presi-
dent of the American Jewish
Congress, was once president of
the Zionist Organization of
America and is one of the most
distinguished Jewish leaders in
the world. Not least important
of his duties, of course, is his
position of Rabbi of the Free
Synagogue of New York.
I hope you are all enjoying
the summer vacation and that
some of you will take time out
of your play periods to write
riddles, poems, and stories for
this column.

5,000 JEWS MASSACRED
BY NAZIS IN CRIMEA
An eye-witness report of the
Nazi massacre of 5,000 civilian
Jews in the city of Kerch, in the
Crimea, was brought here this
week by a Jewish fisherman,
Josef Weingarten, who succeeded
in escaping from the city.
Weingarten was left for dead
by the Nazis after being mach-
ine-gunned together with hun
dreds of other Kerch Jews in a
ditch. He regained conscious-
ness and crawled out of the
mass-grave. Thirteen da later
he reached the Russian rmy's
lines where he was given medi-
cal treatment.
The Jewish fisherman told
the gruesome story of how the
Nazis rounded up Jews in Kerch
every day, herded them into
trucks, and transported them to
their death uder the pretext
that they were being sent to
work in the fields.
Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt with the
program that she commented
upon it in her diary which is
