WEIZMANN MEETS
LrrviNOFF-
Dr. Chaim Weizmann, the
great Jewish nationalist, and
Maxim Litvinoff, the Jewish in-
ternationalist, recently met each
other for the first time . . . The
meeting was of an official char-
acter and took place in the Soviet
Embassy in Washington . . .
Though both speak Russian at
home, the language they used
in their conversation was Eng-
lish . . . Said Weizmann to Lit-
vinoff: "Has the Soviet Govern-
ment any objection to Palestine
becoming a Jewish State?" . . .
"I personally do not see any ob-
jection to any nation wishing to
have a land of its own," Litvin-
off replied . . . "Yet," smiled Dr.
Weizmann, "Zionism is frowned
upon in your country" . . . "Was
frowned upon," Litvinoff correct-
ed him . . . And seeing that Dr.
Weizmann was puzzled by the
correction, Litvinoff explained:
"You see," he said, "as long as
we considered Britain an enemy
of Soviet Russia, we considered
the Zionists agents of British im-
perialism. Nov that Britain is
our ally, the Zionists are no
longer our enemies" . . . The
conversation then turned to the
Arab-Jewish problem, on wheth-
er Soviet Russia would be ready
to support Jewish aspirations in
Palestine at the forthcoming
peace conference, and on a num-
ber of other highly delicate
questions . . . Litvinoff seemed to
be 'very much impressed with
Dr. Weizmann . . . A few weeks
ago he received David Ben-
Gurion and Dr. Nahum Gold-
man who also enlightened him
concerning Jewish achievements
in Palestine . . .
