Hear Husband
for First Time as Cantor Here

Refugee

Robert S. Tullman's Wife, Safe After 2-Year 'Fight to
Escape Nazis, to Attend Temple Israel
Next Sabbath

The coming Sabbath will be a proud and happy day
for Cantor Robert S. Tullman when he chants the liturgi-
cal hymns in Temple Israel, for on that occasion his wife
who just has arrived here after escaping from war-torn
Europe, will be present and for the first time will hear

her husband's resonant voice as cantor in a synagogue.
Cantor Tullman went to New York City Sunday to meet

his wife after an absence of two
years, and brought her home to
Detroit Thursday.
Cantor Tullman was born in
Kamenetz-Podolsk, Poland, the

son of Cantor Joseph Tullman,
who now lives in Tel Aviv, Pal-
estine.

WAS OPERA STAR

While he was learning the
music of the synagogue from
his father, a friend was impress-
ed by his fine voice and helped
him to finance a course of study.
Later he sang grand opera all
over Europe. Then Hitler came
into power, and Tullman was
eliminated from the opera stage.
As the Nazi hordes spread
through Europe he was forced
to flee from one country to an-
other. He went to Austria, to
Czecho-Slovakia, and finally to
Paris, where he met his future
wife. When the German army
swept into Paris, he escaped to
Marseilles, and there embarked
for America. However, his wife,
whom he had married in Paris,
was not permitted to accompany
him.
It was ony after very lengthy

Fram heard of him. Rabbi Fram
went to the metropolis and

promptly engaged him. Since
corning to Detroit, Cantor Tull-
man has made many friends. He
has appeared numerous times
upon the concert stage, was solo-
ist with the WPA Symphony or-
chestra, and has assisted in the
Jewish Community Center and
the Jewish Music series. He will
take part in a concert of Jewish
music May 17, at Shaarey Zedek.

Dr. Wieser was graduated
from the University of Michigan

in Switzerland for 12 years, but
