Former Judge Jonah Goldstein
of Brooklyn filed a petition with ,
the U. S. Post Office Department
asking that Social Justice be
banned from the mails. The pe-
tition contained thousands of sig-
natures, representing many faiths
and including a large number of
Catholics. It charged that Social
Justice attempts to incite to riot,
attempts to impede the war ef-
fort and is "treasonable to the
United States."
Taking note of the rising tide of criticism of Social
Justice, organ identified with Charles Coughlin,
among Catholics as well as Americans generally, in
the Michigan Catholic, diocesan publication, the Rev.
Edward J. Hickey, chancellor of the archdiocese, has
editorially denied that the anti-Semitic, anti-Roose-
velt weekly is "a Catholic paper." Chancellor Hickey
wanted it particularly emphasized that although the
paper was published in his jurisdiction it was not
"under the supervision of proper church authority."
"For nearly two years back—since Father Cough-
lin's latest withdrawal from responsibility for Social
Justice with the issue of May 27. 1940—no priest of
this diocese has asked or received permission to con-
tribute to Social Justice and no priest of this diocese
has been authorized to associate himself in any ca-
pacity- with its publication or circulation, or, to the
knowledge of this office, has actually done so. In a
word, the Archdiocese of Detroit has no responsibil-
ity, direct or indirect, for Social Justice Magazine."

Coughlin. and Social Justice
The Rev. Edward J. Hickey, Chancellor of the Arch-
diocese of Detroit, has issued a statement declaring that
Social Justice, the magazine founded and edited for years
by Fr. Charles E. Coughlin, is not a Catholic publication
and that Fr. Coughlin is no longer associated with it.
But it is reaffirmed that'the paper is in the hands of the
Coughlin family, and that it is owned by the Royal Oak
priest's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Coughlin.
Is it conceivable that people will remain so naive as to
believe that Fr. Coughlin has not been the inspiration of
the anti-Semitic and anti-Roosevelt articles in Social Jus-
tice?
Something had better be done about Social Justice as
quickly as possible, and it is for the United States Govern-
ment to watch for the seditious utterances in this hate-in-
spiring magazine and to put an end to its activities.
