DETROIT JEWISII CHRONICLE

Letters to the Editor

READER DEFENDS SOCIAL
ORDER OF EAST EUROPE
To the Editor:
In the Nov. 10 issue of the
Jewish Chronicle, William Zuk-
erman bemoans the sorry plight
of the Jewish woman's rights.
Though I myself am not ac-
quainted with the pros and cons
of the argument, I must admit
that Mr. Zukerman's article is
a most forceful argument towards
furthering segregation.
According to Mr. Zukerman's
supposition that the superiority
of the ghetto woman over her
spouse was her prowess as
breadwinner, thereby earning
her the title as the real man of
the family, we must arrive at
the inevitable conclusion that in
our present civilized world
where the man of the family is
truly the man, the woman again
assumes her inferiority.
It is further apparent that the
machine age has distorted Mr.
Zukerman's perspective to such
a degree that he bases the
superiority of the ghetto woman
on her ability to perform phys-
ical tasks such as milking cows
and tending gardens. With this
assumption, the horse is far
more superior than either man
or woman in regard to his abil-
ity to work.
There can be no doubt in the
mind of anyone that the true
superiority of the human race
is its intellect and it is without
reserve that I state that the
greatest contributions to civiliza-
tion were made by people
whose only asset was their in-
tellect. I have yet to hear the
world condemn its great phil-
osophers on the basis that they
were weak, flabby and unable
to do practical work.
Therefore I deem it an honor
to be a descendant of such great
men who were willing to sac-
rifice their material world in
order th: 4 t'ley might attain a

loftier concep,ion of man's duties

on this world, and a descendant
of such great women who also
shared in the sacrifice to help
their husbands reach their goal.
Another point of Mr. Zuker-
man's article at which I was
taken aback, was his statement
that the philosophy of this type
of Jew was invented only after

Masada Schedules
Hanukkah Party

The Masada Chapter, ZOD, is
holding its Hanukkah party at
the Davison Center at 8:30 p.m.
Thursday, Dec. 7. Leonard Ba-
ruch will explain the significance
of Hanukkah.
A social hour with refresh-
ments, games and dancing will
follow the short, informal speech.
All young adults can help to
make this party a success, by
bringing any discarded, personal
belongings Thursday evening.
These "white elephants" will be
used as prizes in the Hanukkah
frolic.

he had supposedly deteriorated
in order to justify himself. How
can a person who possesses any
common sense believe such a
ridiculous statement, that a per-
son should devote himself wholly
to study and deprive himself of
material wealth without any
ideal whatsoever and only later
invent the ideal to justify him-
self?
As I stated before, I am a
long way from orthodox beliefs,
nevertheless I cannot stand by
and watch the public be fed
articles of such caliber by an
apparent hangover from the age
of chivalry.
I am certain that if the
Chronicle would truly be in-
terested in the matter, it would
carry an article presenting the
logical views of each side of the
argument by people who possess
true intellectual honesty.
