present history of undefended American Jewry.

WHAT WILL OUR Jewish defense agencies have
to say Nbout the denazification policy in Germany
now that the State Department will have the approval
of the prosperous National Conference of Christians
and Jews?
Within the next few weeks an official announce-
ment will be forthcoming from Washington to the
effect that the suppression of anti-Semitism is being
handed over to the competent representatives of the
National Conference.

NOTWITHSTANDING THE TRIUMPHANT com-
mentaries about the lifting of the arm embrago to
Israel, the applications for purchase of arms by the
government of Israel are gathering dust in London
and Washington.
Aubrey Eban, the new Israel ambassador in Wash-
ington, is fed up with the run-around he is getting
in Trumanville.
He is straining to speak out but Tel Aviv and
especially President Weizmann are counselling
patience. That is why Eban left suddenly for a short

cago Tribune case .. .
We were too optimistic in our prediction. It
never occurred to us .hat our defense agencies would
accept a private apology from the
Chicago Tribune.
The Tribune managing editor did
not agree to a public retraction.
And what is more the letter from
the Tribune to our defense agencies
does not retract the insult ana
slander heaped on Justice Frank-
furter, Sen. Lehman and Henry
Morgenthau, Jr.
It merely states that the article
attacked them "as public figures and
not as Jews."

Which means that the Tribune repeated the
slander and that our American Jewish Committee-led
defense agencies accepted a new insult.
There was not even a private retraction. This
closes the case but opens a new chapter in the

UN 'Peace Army' Haltedi
Palestine War Buitche

An unarmed UN "peace army"
stopped the fighting between
Jews and Arabs, Dr. Ralph J.
Bunche, head of the UN Trustee-
ship Department, told the Amer-
ican Red Cross convention June
28.
Dr. Bunche, who was Introduc-
ed by Gen. George C. Marshall,
president of the American Red
Cross, devoted the major part of
his address to his experiences as
a mediator in Palestine to prove
his point that 'it is not natural for
people to hate, to wage war and
kill each other. It is in brother;
hood and peace alone that man
can find happiness and full ex-
pression." .
The speaker, a native Detroiter,
reminded the audience that the
United Nations intervened, in the

heroism, Bunche said, but human

area "substantial numbers of
men and women whose.job it was
to stop Arabs and Jews from
killing each other.... They were
motivated not by national pa-
triotism, but only by the cause
of peace for which the UN
stands."
Bunche recalled that individ-
ual members of this peace army
rose to acts of heroism as noble
as many performed by soldiers
of war. He paid a special trib-
ute to Count Folke Bernadotte
who gave his life for the cause
of peace. Ten more UN officials
joined him in the supreme sacri-
fice.
There was the case of the
French observer, Bunche relat-
ed, who used to lead unarmed
Jewish convoys to Jerusalem.
One day the convoy was am-
bushed by Arabs. The Frenchman
ran toward the attacking party
and succeeded in disbursing
them.
On Mt. Scopus, seven UN
guards held out for 10 days be-
tween the first and second truce
in July, 1948.
However, there was not only

kindness, too. He told the story
of the. Arab official whose family
was killed in the collapse of a
building. The head of the Israeli
delegation to Rhodes was sitting
beside him, sharing in compassion
the sorrow of the Arab.
"I have seen these bitter
enemies," Bundle said, "the
Arabs and Jews, who had been
mercilessly killing each other,
join together in joyous celebra-
tion when the armistice agree-
ments were signed at Rhodes."
Throughout his speech, Dr.
Bunche emphasized that - to his
mind war is unnecessary since
"when the totals are added up
in any society, the good far out-
weighs the bad."
"There is no reason to despair,"
the speaker concluded, "so long
as there is the chance to appeal
to man's better nature—to his
reason and his heart. Man's
better nature must be harnessed
as an irresistible force for good.
All that has been lacking is trial.
We are lost only if we lose faith
in ourselves and fall prey to cor-
roding cynicism."

NEXT MONTH ALFRED KNOPF will bring out a
new book by Maurice Samuel, the brilliant author
whom the American public seems to forget in between
the publication of his books.
The title of the new Samuel volume is "The
Gentlemen and the Jews."
The advance notices say that Maurice Samuel
presents two conflicting ideas, the gentlemen, and
the Jews.
"The gentleman is a killer," says Samuel, attempt-
ing to show that the ideal of the gentleman is purely
pagan.
Samuel uses the framework of autobiography to
show his early inculation with the gentlemanly ideal,
his rediscovery of the Bible and his understanding
of the meaning of Zionism.
It will be more than interesting to compare
Samuel's search with that of Meyer Levin.
Each traveled a different road that led to Israel.
Which path was more adventurous?

LONDON—(WNS)—Sir Oswald
Mosley's Fascist party was given
a thorough trouncing this week
when, in a special election in
the Hempstead district, its can-
didate received, a grand total of
34 votes.
The Fascist candidate's chief
election weapon was that the
current housing shortage was
solely the fault of "alien Jews."
